Hello and happy new year! Well almost happy.
So we had the sleds out on the lake by my cousin. They started and ran good. Took them out and the touring 380 died. My son was on it. We were pushing them kind of hard. I noticed they had a raunchy smell like being very hot! I noticed my AC had the same smell. But it was fine.
Got them home and checked the compression I had 90 on the mag side and 40 on the flywheel side (both sides were 90 and it was going to get pistons over the summer). You can see the top of the piston burnt while the other side was good other than the rings were starting to stick.
My question is what happened? I cleaned the carbs when I was getting it ready. I drained the gas, there may have been 1 1/2 gallons left in it from last year. I filled them up yesterday with fresh gas. Could that old fuel have done this? What about the smell? Has anyone else had that smell? I have pistons and gaskets competing this week. But I dont want to have this happen again. Like I said it was running good, its possible this piston has been like this for a while and maybe yesterday was just the end of it. They have been replaced once before because they are .010 pistons.
And that smell worrys me. Im going to drain the AC gas too since that also smelled raunchy when running. I dont think its the new gas because I used 87 in the Doo and 91 in the Cat.
Here are some pics.
