1995 600 XLT runs well for a few minutes then bogs out

dimanche 21 janvier 2018

So last spring I bought my kids a cheap 600 XLT Special for us to run around our property. I got it pretty cheap because he had pulled the recoil out of it mid-winter and just moved on to a different sled. He told me that it was running fine when he yanked the recoil out of it.

I got the recoil fixed and the plastic rope guides replaced with aluminum and got it fired up on the trailer last spring before putting it away. This fall when I got it out I filled it with fresh gas. It took about 9 gallons. A few weeks ago I pulled it out and got it fired up. It smoked quite a bit on that first start up but nothing terrible. We took it around the house a couple times and it started to bog out. It would idle fine but if I gave it throttle it would die out around 3000 rpm or so. A couple days after that, I fired it up again and found that it would run ok with the choke on. I took a couple laps around the house and then parked it until I could clean up the carbs.

I pulled the carbs last night and put them in my ultrasonic cleaners for the day. They looked fine inside when I pulled them apart but I kept going anyway. I got everything back together tonight and got the sled fired up. Unfortunately it is still behaving the same. It went a couple laps around the house and started to bog. I flipped the choke on and it immediately recovered. After 50 feet or so I flipped the choke off as it was starting to bog again. It ran fine for another half lap around the house and then did the same thing.

This is my first foray into snowmobiles. I'm usually a 4 stroke atv and mower guy. I do know how to clean a carb though (and they were pretty clean looking as is) so I'm thinking those are likely fine. I'm thinking I have a fuel delivery issue somewhere but I'm not all that confident in that diagnosis.

At this point my next plans are:
  • loosen the fuel cap in case the tank isn't venting
  • replace the fuel filter
  • verify fuel flow by pulling the sled over with the #1 cylinder gas line off to see if I have good flow

Any input, relevant experiences with a similar sled or wild ass guesses are appreciated.
