I have a '94 440 XCR with the red top motor. The sled has been running and usable since I've had it, but it fouls plugs really quickly and seems to be running pig rich at idle (lots of smoke). I've recently been looking into it and I've discovered that in trying to adjust idle speed, once the idle screws are turned in to a certain point the idle simply runs away up to 3-4k RPM and stays there until I back one or more out, at which point the idle returns to 1400 or so. I can't adjust it upwards of that without it racing high and staying there. I made sure the choke cables were adjusted to specified 1/16" freeplay but it made no difference to the apparent rich running condition. I should also be clear that I'm not certain whether the rich running is fuel or oil related at this point, but my best guess is fuel.
Next step seems to be to pull the carbs and clean them, then check oiler setting. Anything specific that these symptoms point to? I'm new to carbs and any help is appreciated. Also, apologies if this has been covered elsewhere. I searched through the forum for awhile but didn't see this exact combo of running conditions mentioned. Thanks!
