I acquired a 650 triple engine awhile ago. It ran, but I didn't have anything to put it in. From my experience looking, if there was a sled that this engine fit in that needed an engine, it was due to neglect - and the rest of the sled was also neglected. And any sled that the owner had taken care of, the engine was still good. So, a month or so ago, I finally gave up and put the engine up for sale. And wouldn't you know it - I soon found a sled for sale that looked to be exactly what I needed. It's a 1992 Polaris RXL that is in pretty good overall shape - but the engine is seized.
I went to look at it, made what I think was a good deal, and brought it home.


From what I understand, the snowmobile was parked with the plugs removed for about 2 years. The cylinders corroded and the engine seized. The PO pulled the head, and soaked the cylinders with penetrating oil to no avail. So that's how she sits now:

And that's really the only thing that looks bad on the sled. The hood, windshield, seat, gauges are all in decent shape. The paint on the hood is a bit faded - but not a big deal. The track and skid are all in good shape and move easily.

Steering components all move like they should. Wiring appears to be all intact.
My first step is obviously going to be to pull out the exisiting engine. Then, I got a decision to make. EFI or Carbs? My engine is carb'd and I know it'll run that way. The seized engine is EFI.
Any thoughts on which way to go? Keep my engine as is and drop it into place? All I'd have to do is remove the EFI wiring, and mount a diaphragm fuel pump.
Or, do I pull the intake manifolds of my engine and put the efi throttle bodies on it? Is there a crank sensor or something on the EFI engine that I'd need to put on my carb'd engine to fire the injectors?
Any thoughts or advice is appreciated. Won't be doing much of anything until it warms up a bit. My garage is heated, but when the temps top out at -5°F, it's still pretty cold out there!
