Me again! Finally got this Xlv-540 running smooth.
Having ridden it now the past couple days on varying snow and grass conditions, I have been unable to get sled to top 35mph. Forums and retail.information have stayed the stock sled did around 70-80, which is what I'd ultimately like to regain. The following symptoms are what I've noticed over the past couple days. Let's see if anyone can point me in the right direction. (Bare in mind the tach does not work so I can't elaborate on rpm)
1: when taking off, the sled consistently gains rpm, then i hear it drop off and settle into a hum at 35mph
2: both clutches seem to be engaging, thought they have never been touched to my knowledge, and the primary clutch appears to have some groves forming where the belt initially grabs.
3: Though I can't provide an rpm, I can tell the clutch is engaging at a low rpm. It grabs the belt with very little throttle input
4: Acceleration leaves much to be desired, it's pretty bad. And I don't have much power to climb snowbanks or get over plowed snow on the roadsides.
My initial feeling are that there are clutching issues, but I'm not sure where to begin looking. Any and all advice is appreciated, this sleds been a fun project over the last month.
