Hey, never seen this problem before.
Short version: The black rubber fill plug on the chain case burped out a little and spit gear oil on the exhaust. Anyone ever seen this?
Long version: Stock sled, excellent condition. I took it apart & rebuilt it summer of 2015, put ~400 miles on it winter 2015, including 200 hard miles playing in big snow at 6000 to 8000'. No problems. I fogged it and cleaned it up for summer storage.
Took it out last week for a quick test run, 1st ride this year, no probs.
I rode it today in 2' of powder. I went about 4 miles out in deep powder, and decided to go home. We haven't had any warm spells, just steady cold air and snow, so the snow is super dry silty powder. The sled never gets a bite. I got bored after 4 miles and hit a trail back home. On the way home, I smelled gear oil. I stopped to check, that's when I discovered the "burped" out edge of the fill plug and burned oil on the exhaust. The chain case was hot! It boiled a small handful of snow thrown on it. I gently cooled it down with some more snow. I pulled the fill plug off and could see wet gear oil on the upper gear behind the plug. The brake wasn't stuck or hot, just the chain case.
So I limped home with no probs, revved up my drive and killed the engine at 6000rpms so I could check the spark plugs to see if the motor had gone lean and overheated the exhaust. Nope - nice cardboard color.
I'll check the gear oil level tomorrow.
I've never seen this on any vmax or phazer I've owned (8 different sleds). Maybe I overfilled it and then it got hot fighting powder and it spit the plug out?
Any ideas? Anybody ever seen a chaincase get hot like that?
Thanks.
