Hi all...
Today I went out to put a new belt on my sled. For the life of me I couldn't simultaneously hold the sheaves apart while manipulating the belt around it. Since often I've survived by the "necessity is the mother of all invention" mantra...(and because I work on old British cars)I figured I'd fashion some sort of tool to do this. Well...I did.
I simply bought a PVC pipe cap then drilled a hole through the center where the clutch bolt passes through. I used a large fender washer to help distribute the load as well.
Simply use a 1/2" ratcheting box end to remove the clutch bolt, pass it through the cap with the concave side against the clutch. Then just thread the bolt back in and start tightening. It will pull the sheave apart very easily AND hold it. Can be done with gloves on and takes about 2 min from start to finish.
Very lightweight, and I'll simply carry it in my tool kit.
In the pics I used the same sized bolt as is in the clutch. Some clutches may vary so try it out prior to needing it on the trail! You may need a slightly longer bolt to find purchase on the threads(which is what I thought) however in my case the original bolt worked just fine.
