Pantera 580 trail side repar and woes

lundi 19 mars 2018

Hi guys bit of an update for those interested. I had posted a while back just getting into sledding. Have had a blast and I never want winter to end.

Ah my Pantera has given me some trouble the last two times out. After 400 solo miles my wife finally gets out for the first time. Ha, 2 mi in and we rolled it going through the woods. Just hit some unlevel ground. It is very tippy with her on the back and the spring cam is on it's max setting. Tensioner straps are loose, sled seems heavy in steering yet almost feels like it wants to wheelie at the same time if I gas it a bit. Anyway, she was not impressed nor was the sled. We switched to level trails which was better but not as enjoyable for me as sled handled just too burdened down. Was doable but got 15 mi in before the belt shredded some ribs. Than on the trailer she says what's that green stuff leaking out the rear. Grr the heat exchanger developed a hairline crack. Not sure if a tree limb kicked up and hit it as no bent fins.

So status update, told the old girl I'd treat her to some 6 in bergstron triples, a new belt, and had a fun time pulling rear heat exchanger too braze the crack shut.

Mission successful, 90 mi put on last Friday and yet towards the end developed a tinging type noise. Took it out sat and 5 mi in had to stop and found starter had come loose rubbing on flywheel. The whole motor lost a bolt and the brush cap seperating. Wtf! My electric start had started acting up a while back so I switched to pull start as that's what I like. Hmm cheap fix maybe. Thought it was a Bendix style and throw out bearing stuck. Haha, so trail side repair pulled starter off, zip tied things up and put 65 mi on her.

Up here on the hill 15 in of powder and I carved in it with my 2 up. Never let off throttle fear of getting stuck with the trail track but man for a stock 3/4 lug she does pretty good.

I have another trip planned and will have 600 mi on the 2300 mi sled I bought before she takes a summer nap. The wife gave me permission to sell it as she hates snowmobiles now. So, no plans to sell I will just consider another sled. Considering a zr or mxz not sure. I'm sure she'd like riding the Pantera solo.

It really has been a great sled. Oh and reinstalled heat exchanger with stainless screws. Rivets? Grr

P.S. couldn't shim the skis as the bushings rusted fast to the bolts and these newer sleds handle the whoops much better but I love my old girl.
