Heavily grooved helix

dimanche 26 novembre 2017

So, I recently fired up my brother's sled, a '94 Indy 500 SKS EFI, and in looking it over I noticed some grooves on the outer surface of the helix where it rides on the bushing in the inner sheave. I've attached a couple pictures; there are three sets of grooves, roughly in the same spot relative to the adjacent ramp. The bushing is also grooved in similar fashion. Other than that, everything looks good: the buttons show little wear and aren't cracked, the spring looks new, and it's pretty clean. So, any ideas what caused this? My RMK's secondary with twice the mileage didn't have anything like this, and I can't see or figure out anything that might be behind it.

I figure I'll replace the helix and bushing, but it'd be nice to know whether that'll take care of it. The sled has always worked fine, the only complaint I have that may be related is that it seems a lot less responsive to power inputs than my RMK. Obviously it's got quite a bit less, but when you pin it at low to mid-speed it seems to take an extra second or two to spin up and move you. Hoping someone knows what caused it, and that it's nothing major!
