Exciter 570LC troubleshooting and potential upgrades

lundi 30 janvier 2017

Hello all! I am still fairly new to this forum, but I thought I would start a thread with a couple of questions about a 1987 Yamaha Exciter 570LC that I recently picked up for $150. Forgive me if my questions have already been asked elsewhere on the forum. I did look around, but I didn't find anything that exactly answered my questions completely.

First and foremost, the sled I bought is in really good shape cosmetically(No rips in the original seat, all body parts are cosmetically sound, track and suspension look good, etc.). The odometer says it has 3700 miles. The guy I purchased from said he had completely gone through it at the beginning of the season to tune it up, and that it ran fine half a dozen times. The last time he parked it there was no issue, but when he went out to start it a few days later it wouldn't start. He checked compression and got 115psi and 50psi (50psi was in exhaust side cylinder). He told me he didn't really want to mess with it, and had not tried checking into what the cause of the issue was. I am fairly new to working on snowmobiles but I would like to learn more and try to get this old Exciter running. I rechecked compression when I got the sled home and got 115 and 30 (exhaust side cylinder). My question main is, what should my first step(s) to fixing this issue be and what do I need to look out for?? Also, where is the most cost effective place to find good replacement parts for this engine?

The other question I had was in regard to upgrades and add-ons for this sled. Assuming that it isn't going to take a fortune to fix the engine issue...are there any upgrades that people could recommend for this sled down the road? It looks like everything on it is original, but I was thinking that plastic skis, newer suspension components (not sure about this), and maybe looking into some of the 'upgrades' that Bender Racing put out. It does looks like the carbs were changed on this sled at one point. The ones currently in it look like newer round slide carbs which, from what I have read on here, are not correct for an 87 Exciter.

I'm open to any and all suggestions and would really appreciate any help/advice on this!! Thanks in advance! :nerd:
