1996 polaris triple for new rider? what to look for?

i found one on Craigslist for 500$ but my concern is that it wont work well and will be a money pit..... i have also heard of many problems with this model from crank case failure to oil problems ..... but im on a very tight budget is there anything i need to look for/ listen for when i go look at it? or should i look at another snowmobile if so what one? thx for your help in advance
