I don’t know what I have here

mercredi 28 février 2018

Hey all, I’m getting into snowmobiles for the first time. Last night I picked up two older ones that are rough, the seller got them in a trade and couldn’t tell me much about them. I just want to run around on the ranch a little bit, if I get into it then I may sell these and get a nicer one.

The pink one runs roughly but I suspect has a clutch problem. The seller had to rev the snot out of it to drive across the grass and onto the trailer. What model is this thing, and about how old is it?

The blue one is much nicer, but the pull start parts are broken and there’s no battery so we don’t know if it runs. It’s been wrecked, the entire left side front ski and steering parts have been removed and the right side has a broken support arm.

Any idea what year this is, and where I can get parts? Because these are rough and I don’t intend to keep them forever (unless they’re just super solid, great machines) I don’t want to spend too much fixing them up. Any suggestions on where to find parts, or any other advice for someone who has never messed with these things before?

Thanks!

dim lights

hello, I'm new to this site thought I'd give it shot. I have 1989 Polaris indy 500 and the lights are very dim. the tac and speedo work but when I hit the dimmer switch they go out. I've replaced the switch and voltage regulator and no change. would the cdi box be and issue with the lighting or am I looking at a stator problem?

So, I'm very new to your forum here and I just wanted to share some photos of my project I'm finishing up here in Arizona. YES, I said Arizona. Laugh as you will(lol) we do get snow enough to sled, sometimes. Albeit, it's an hour and a half or more away, when I get home I can change into my shorts and flip flops and wash my machine.
It's been fully restored, well getting close anyhow, and I'm looking to see if you think I screwed it up by changing the color ? Engine has been completely gone through, crank trued, pinned and welded so it can't start walking apart again, resleeved with new pistons and rings. Restored the belly pan due to previous owner locating a large stump with it and had to straighten the front crossmember and fish plate it to give it its strength back. All new track idler wheels, sliders, springs and track. Complete repaint/color change all around. I couldn't bring myself to put the bass boat silver back on it. Now just to finish the reassembly and hope and wait for snow. Probably next winter by the looks of it. :( Give me your thoughts all you vintage sled guru's.

PIston failure diagnosis?

Rebuilding top end on 2008 RMK 600. Before I put this back together I want to be sure I’ve addressed any issues that caused the failure.

On the mag side it looks like pieces of the piston broke off and rattled around in the cylinder. My ideas what could have caused this?

On the pto side there is grooving on the back side of the piston but jug looks fine. What would cause this?

The bowl is cracked on one of the two and I've been trying to find a replacement online. its got a jet in the bottom of the bowl with a line running up to the carb which seems to act like a secondary of some kind. its also got .t.77 marked on the carb under where the primer connects. i had found the set in a john deere liquifire.

Differences and advice?

samedi 24 février 2018

So, just sold my 2001 700RMK to a buddy ( my girlfriends sled) because it did not have reverse, and my girlfriend likes that option on my sled. So I am going to have her ride my 2004 700 Vertical Escape, 151 track with reverse and electric start. She likes the longer track ( 151 vs 136) on my sled.

My question is, what is the difference between the 2000-2002 RMK and the 2003-2004 Vertical Edge besides the different console look? I am looking to get another "matching" sled to my girlfriends "new" sled. Wondering if I am just wasting time with the older sleds, and I should get something newer?

Made the typical agreement with the girl friend, if I sell a sled, I can get another...... So, now I am looking......
The new ones at the dealer look great, but not sure I want to go that way...... Even though it appears they have worked out the kinks and reliability on the newer sleds...... Just found another Vertical Edge near me, 2004, but I think it has a 144 track.... but is $2000, which is better than the price on a new sled.....

Any advice is appreciated

1996 vmax 600 st lost power

I have a 1996 vmax 600 mountain max. I was at the lake ice fishing and fishing was slow so I went for a rip on my sled. I was at about 3/4 throttle going across the lake and all of a sudden it lost power and the rpms dropped. I stopped checked my duel exhaust both cylinders seem to be firing I shut the sled off and pulled the plugs. One was a nice brown like they are supposed to be and the other one was dark grey like primer. I changed the plugs thinking it was a plug problem. It Started first pulled I checked the dual exhaust and both seemed to be working. I headedback towards my ice shack but could not get the sled to go over 4500rpm. I tried to bypass the tors sensor at the carburetor but no change

Does anyone have an idea where I should start to find out what is wrong with it? Any help would be appreciated guys.

i a new owner of my first sled it is used 95 yamaha vmax 500. engine swapped out for a 600. My issue is with the hand warmers. I wired them correctly but when i was feeding my last wire through the frame (the power Hott wire) from the wire harness coming from fuse box under the battery, was feeding it through the frame and was exposed. therefore it touched the frame and sparked everywhere. Please tell me i didnt fry my whole system and this is just a simple fuse replacement.

Polaris Engine Seized while pulling clutch

Here's a problem I haven't had before. I've worked on sleds for 40 years and removed dozens of clutches before. My clutch maintenance may have turned into an engine rebuild project.
I found a decent Polaris 1997 Indy Trail with the 500 Fan cooled engine. It has 6000 miles on it. It worked great all weekend as we drove over 100 miles at an average speed. Not pushing it at all. It was using lots of injection oil and the jetting is spot on because the plugs look perfect.
The only problem was that the primary clutch was sticking a bit. I bought a proper clutch puller for this engine and had a real hard time getting the clutch off. Not unusual if it hasn't come off in 20 years. I braced the clutch with a bar so it couldn't turn. I had a 12" ratchet handle and got the bolt as tight as I could. I lightly tapped the end of the bolt with a hammer and repeat, repeat, repeat.
As I was going through this process I realized that the engine had totally seized. I removed the bar that was holding the clutch in place and the shaft was totally immovable. It's not turning even a bit. I've never seen this before. I wasn't pulling on the engine exceptionally hard. I only had a 12" handle on my ratchet and I'm not a big guy. I've seen 200 pound guys use 3' bars (although I don't recommend it). I've heard of guys using a 3' bar. Since the shaft isn't moving at all it's like the crank bearings are totally seized. If it were the pistons you would feel some movement. I did get the clutch off after I gave some penetrating oil time to work. This work was done with the engine cold. The last time it was running was when I drove it on my trailer 3 days ago and it seemed fine.
This is my first Polaris. Is this a common problem? Does this sound like crank bearings or a bent crank? Thanks for any advice and I'll take sympathy and donations as well.

Polaris Engine Seized while pulling clutch

Hello from Ottawa Canada

Hi there, I'm new to this forum but I've been sledding and wrenching my own machines for over 40 years. I stopped for a few years but decided to get something reliable that I could use once or twice a year just to get into my buddies cottage. I found a decent Polaris 1997 Indy Trail with the 500 Fan cooled engine. It has 6000 miles on it. It worked great all weekend as we drove over 100 miles.
I did have a fatal problem while attempting to remove my clutch today but I'll leave that drama for the Polaris Forum. Something to do with the engine seizing while I was removing the clutch.

Here is a list of sleds that I can remember my family has had over the years. I may have missed some. I'm not counting parts sleds either.

Everything looks good when I open it up on the stand and it will go wot no prob. I have the carbs set to factory jetting with air screws out 1.5 turns. Don't know if it's a carb or clutch problem. Any experience with this issue out there? Any help is appreciated. Brake Cable length??????

I have a 1996 Polaris Indy 600 XCR SP back home. I just need to know the length of the stock brake cable that runs from the handlebar to the brake. Without it right in front of me I can’t find anywhere that has the inches mentioned online. My local Polaris dealer can’t find it and I submitted an inquiry to Polaris parts department and it said they’ll get back to me within 3-5 days. So anyone know off the top of your head or anyone have the same sled or a XLT(basically the same sled) that can check theirs out? Thanks guys.

2007 SkiDoo Summit 800 Questions

I have the opportunity to pick up a 2007 SkiDoo Summit 800 for a pretty good deal. I know it is not running, and I will have the opportunity to check it out, but I have also seen some information that the engine on this sled is ridden with problems as it was the first of its generation. Should I just steer clear of this sled based on that or worth checking out.

I was going to check the following:

Compression
Spark
Air
Fuel
Chaincase
Belt

I am somewhat of a novice. I have been working on an old Arctic Cat and an old Polaris. Got them running pretty well. Any advise is welcome.

2001 Yamaha SXR 500 sputters and bogs at low speeds

lundi 19 février 2018

We need some help trying to solve a problem. We have a 2001 SXR 500 that sputters and bogs at low speeds and guzzles fuel. We have replaced the fuel pump, gone through the carbs many times, New needle and seats, reeds are good, changed the coil and ECU unit, tried different plugs. Jetting is dialed and when it reaches power band, it’s a rocket ship. We are out of ideas. Any help would be great. The sled is in primo condition.

Yamaha 1979 Excel V 540 Fuel Help

dimanche 18 février 2018

OVer my time of working with lots of different carburators on dirtbikes. I ran into a problem with the excel v I picked up last year. I got it running with the original butterfly carb but wanted a slide on it. I bough a mikuni Vm44 carb and rejetted. I had the same problems with both carbs. The needle seat and float was bench set and check just by blowing through fuel line. But everytime I go to run the sled I keep dripping gas out the overflow. I cant stand to ride it becuase it reeks of fuel. I have fuel filters on it and a external airfilter running through the airbox. The only thing I can come up with is that the vacum fuel pump was replaced and the pressure is blowing the needle open. But then I come back to the fact that me blowing hard through the line can't blow the valve. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks very much.

Phazer Carb Issues

I recently acquired a 97 Phazer SS electric start. The carbs weren’t working well and I was only able to run it on full or half choke. Flipping the choke off acted as if someone hit a kill switch. I pulled the airbox to inspect and clean and the carbs. First time off I just did a quick clean of the bowls and main jets. One main tube was stuck in and I couldn’t get it out so I just sprayed carb cleaner through it. At the time I didn’t know that the pilot jets were under the rubber plug. Anyway I put them back on and it ran with identical symptoms.

Round 2 I pulled the carbs again and this time pulled the rubber plugs. I can’t get either pilot jet out and have damaged the ears even with a well fitting screw driver and heat and penetrating oil. Still can’t get the other main tube out either. But I soaked the carbs in carb cleaner bucket over night and sprayed compressed air followed with carb cleaner through everything. Everything appears to be clear as I can spray through it and get exit somewhere else.

Now the sled won’t start at all. Sometimes it gets a tiny blip of a start but immediately dies. I thought maybe I damaged the throttle safety switch so I attempted disconnecting the wires to remove this from the equation while I trouble shoot. It appears with it disconnected I get no spark at all. I thought disconnecting it should remove it from the system and it should still run without this safety feature perhaps I am wrong.

With it plugged back in I get a spark but no start. I am at my wits end with this thing I guess I am looking at finding a set of carbs since I can’t get the jets out of this one for a proper cleaning.

Anyone have any other ideas?

Electrical Problems 2003 Yamaha Viper

I just bought a nice viper and have been having some issues. A few rides back the lights went dim about 15 min into the ride, but came back on. Did this a few times. Just rode the other night and it did it again after about 15 min, but this time they stayed dim. I figured it was the voltage regulator, so I put a new on of those on. Now, the sled starts, sputters, and backfires and the lights are almost entirely out. Does this with both old and new regulators because I threw the old one back on to see if there was any change. I let it warm up and all of a sudden it worked normal, but would kind of go in and out. The guy I bought it from put a newer used stator in, but I didn't ask why. Guess I should've. Could a bad ground cause the symptoms I'm experiencing, or is it most likely the stator? Thanks for any input you guys have. I'm really frustrated.

87 Exciter 570 bent a connecting rod...at start up!

Sled was running great when I pulled it off the trailer this year. Went to take her for a spin a couple weeks ago, pulled the cord, it barely blipped, and stuck solid. Engine would only turn half a revolution then stop. Tore the jugs off, low and behold a bent connecting rod on mag side cylinder.

Somehow the crankcase managed to fill with fuel, and I’m guessing it hydrolocked. But it would do this on start up? I’ve heard of this being caused by a leaky carb, and it appears that was the case. Never seen this happen before.

So now I’m contemplating what to do next. How hard is it to install a rod? I’ve heard the crank is pressed together. It’s a clean sled with only 2100 miles. Find a used motor? Sell it for parts? With limited riding season here in Chicago this really sucks. Good thing I had the old Phazer for some backup fun.

Picture: Do you know a piston which replace this old piston from 1977?

Hi!

Here is a picture of a piston from my Yamaha STX 340 1977. Bore is 60.0 mm and the coin here is 22.5 mm in diameter.
The piston is exactly the same from Exciter 340 1977. This piston has a diameter below 60.0 mm. About 59.8 mm.

Can you recommend me a piston who have the same diameter, length etc. and two piston rings?

Looking at a sled to buy. Been out of snomobiling for quite a while. Raced Rupp's back in the day to give you an idea how long been away from sport. Moving back to Michigan and need to get re-educated. Have heard the 500 and 600 liquid cooled sleds, late 90's, are solid. Looking at this Indy 600 with slp triple pipes on-line.
Any known weak spots I should look for on this sled or any 500 or 600?

'98 arctic cat ZR600 EFI bog

vendredi 16 février 2018

Hello all!
Newbie to the site and thanks to all for the space!
Recently bought a 98 Arctic Cat ZR600 EFI from a family member with a known problem. Like many mentions on this site, the sled starts and idles and then bogs and looses power on take off. I have not bypassed the TSS yet (but plan to) My question is, on ohms testing the stator windings I get 45 and 479 for the readings. I know spec is 45/450 so is the 479 out of spec 'enough' to cause the issue?
I am a vintage rider and know there is some tolerance in the specs but....
Thanks for any guidance and am excited to be a member. -Dan

How to adjust secondary?

2014 Indy voyager 550. Jerky on the start, so I went to adjust secondary. The clutch is nothing like the manual shows, so I suspect the previous owner may have replaced. The first pic is from my 2008 rmk and is what I expected to see and is what the manual describes. The second is what is actually on the voyager. How do I tighten the belt on this secondary?

2014 Indy voyager 550. Jerky on the start, so I went to adjust secondary. The clutch is nothing like the manual shows, so I suspect the previous owner may have replaced. The first pic is from my 2008 rmk and is what I expected to see and is what the manual describes. The second is what is actually on the voyager. How do I tighten the belt on this secondary?

What model/year is this snowmobile?

Hi guys,

A buddy of mine pulled this snowmobile out of the dump, it runs but needs some parts replaced.
But there is no plates or stickers that are readable on it so I was wondering if you guys could help me identify this :)
Here's a link to the pix because for some reason it's not letting me upload photos to the post

Runs strong, new track. 131 PSI on both cylinders. Seems very well maintained.

Wondering what things I should service on it before next year, and what stuff I should look out for? Thank you.

Looking for a sled

Getting back into the sport. Moving back north to Michigan.
Used to race Rupp 340 FA and 400 Nitro back in the day.
Looking for used Cat or Polaris in the $1000 range. Seeing late 80's and 90's in that price range.
Liquid vs fan / FA. Opinions on 500 and 600's. Any thoughts and advice appreciated. Thanks

94 prowler

mercredi 14 février 2018

So I bought this for 400. Put a battery in it and took it to paradise. After 1/2 day if trying to start it, it finally ran and did great. Brought it back to missouri and started it 3 weeks ago. No problem. Tried to star it over the weekend and no spark. No battery light either. Bought CDI box (worlds hardest thing to get to and 3/4 of what it cost to buy the sled) and now have awesome spark.
It sparks every stroke no problem. Put the plugs in and it fires once every second or third pull but nothing more. Not any different with starting fluid. ECI seems fine. One flash, no error codes. Just canceled our Tri p to houghton. Plugs are dry. if anyone has any suggestions, I'd be greatful fir them. (I had a 76 rabbit that this thing reminds me of. No matter how many things I fixed, there was always something else )

97 zr 440?

So I've found this 97 ZR 440 on a sale sight, guy was asking $500 and said that he was riding it over the weekend and the following day when he tried to start it up that it wouldn't do anything and that he doesn't have any time to mess with it. I asked him if price was negotiable and rite off the bat said he won't go lower than $300... Without me even throwing a offer at him. It needs TLC but the question I have is that, what year did Cat use the side panel hood straps? Was it in 97 or in 98? And are they fanners or liquid cooled? I haven't actually seen it in person yet other than talking to the guy via text and pictures. But would it be something of interest? Thanks for any info.

Cracked Rail

I've got a cracked rail on my 85 Polaris Indy Trail. The bolt holes for the idler wheel mount are snapped in 2 spots (please see photo). I've heard you can weld these was wondering if anyone had this same problem. Also I was searching this forum for similar posts and came across a guy who custom made some pretty cool brackets that can bolt right onto the rail. But I haven't seen anything like that available online. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated

I'm wondering if anybody knows anything about a 1991 Ski Doo Safari LC Electro. It's an older guy I know that has it and he'd ask me if I wanted to buy it awhile back. At the time I wasn't that interested in it nor did I have the money, but now it's kinda caught my eye. Knowing how this guy is with everything else he's got and looking at the thing, it's in very good condition and been taken care of. Track, body, under hood, seat, everything. Its got just under 1500 KM, I think that's around like 1000 US miles. I've been looking for a classic/vintage sled that I can mess around with in the poor snow conditions we've got. I want to be able to ride without having to abuse the mountain sleds to do so. Plus my wife and I have found some pretty good trails around that we'd like to ride and just check out the scenery. I just don't know hardly anything about Ski Doos. I'm curious about reliability, power, problems, Etc. I know it's the same age I am, manufacturer date April 1991. I'm not expecting it to be perfect condition, I'm not lol. If anybody has some info or input I'd definitely appreciate it. Also if anybody could tell me what this thing might be worth so I'm not insulting the guy and I'm not getting screwed as well, if I decide to make an offer. Thanks in advance. Didn't think to get pics of the whole thing, was just trying to get what it was to get info.

Howdy

I'm new to sledding but have been a dirt rider for ever.

After years of renting sleds and then not being able to go because of no snow, I finally decided to buy sleds so we could go to where the snow is.

I have a 1998 Yamaha 500 2 up and an Arctic cat prowler 440 efi.
The Yamaha runs great but the prowler developed a no spark issue that's breaking my heart. I jus cancelled our valentines weekend trip to Michigan. In trying to find the problem, stuff keeps falling apart in my hands. All the plastic is like glass. I have a CDI box coming that was 75% of the purchase price but the thing still has a short somewhere because I'm not getting any dash lights. When the key is on, I show power to the lights, but it appears to be an open circuit. so then, the lead broke off in my hand. Not sure what to do, but am pretty disillusioned with the whole prospect. My wife loves to sled and so do, but I'm tired...

any suggestions will be appreciated.

track alignement and tension

Ok guys, I have a 2014 renegade backcountry x 800R e-tec. I have been working on this for a while. I did it with a cold track . Hot track. Can't get the tension and alignment right. What the heck is the trick?
The book says 1'3/8 in gap at 16 lbs. When the track is hot . It cools down real tight and tracks to one side when warm. Tried a lot of times. Any advise?

2001 Xcf 440 help

So we finally got some snow and was able to work on the sled again. Cleaned the carbs for the 4th time. Vefied the needles are correct, clip is correct, the needle jets are correct, the cut a way is correct. The main jets are set for factory spect for my elevation and temp.320 and 310. Could not read the piolet jets but ideals fine so not two worried about that. I put in new spark plugs. Trimmed 1/4 inch on the plug wires. When the engine is cold it runs good hits the power band for about a minute or two. When engine is warmed up it just bogs down and will not move. The sound changes. Sits for a while to get cold again and will move again for about two minutes. I did the wd40 trick on the crank seal. Did not chang anything. Took the carb boots off no cracks. The crank case reeds looked good as far as I could tell. Checked the compression 110 both cylinders. I’m told that is where it should be for this fan motor.

I think I seen this problem on here before on the zr 600 and it was a stator problem. Anyone know what this stator should ome out at? How do you check the coil? Anything else I can check. Not sure where else to look. I can’t get it to run long enough to do a plug chop test.

bogie/idler wheel bearings

I have an 02 Indy 500 edge. the 4 wheels running outside of my slider frame have failed bearings. The question is does the snowmobile industry use a different quality of bearing for these wheels? I have been using and ordinary 6205 bearing from a farm supply store and they fit perfectly. I can buy a bit better quality bearing from them as well for a bit more money. Its the seals that fail first, likely because of the snow that flying around in the track area.

decent all rounder

soo.. after one year with my current sled ( 1993 grand touring) ive come to embrae its strenght ( on trails ) and kinda shy away from its weaknesses ( off trails) but the price was right to try out the sport.. and with the long ist of fixes it needs or gonna need.. i think its best to change

now.. im really hoping to find one sled thatll do it all kinda thing... i do enjoy being out on the trails but i dont think i NEED a speed deamon machine to enjoy this aspect

i think a fanner is actually a better option to liquid cooled... with the kids in tow.. the temp guage got hotter than i liked to see it.. so that put a stop to that fun that day :(

i do want a 2 seater as i would enjoy taking my spouse out for a spin at times as well... would we actually do some overnight touring-ish.. remains to be seen but just going to the ski lodge a few miles up and back after a hot chocolate or something would be awesome

im thinking 130ish plus long track.. keeping it to 16in wide.. 2 seater.. fanner but on the bigger side ( 440 and up) 1998 being the newest year (decent discount for vintage sled for a trail pass.. im cheap! lol) whats in that bracket you guys?? reliability over performance in my book btw.. whats to shoot for.. whats to avoid?

‘70’s model kitty cat help

So my cousin dropped off his old kitty cat and asked me to get it running. First thing checked for was spark. No spark. I took off the toggle switch and wired the ignition wires together to bypass the toggle. Still no spark. If I use my voltage meter, I do have a little bit of a reading at the spark plug wire but not enough to get spark. Can some one help me from here? Is there a voltage spec that I can test for?

Very High Idle

Gents, I am at an absolute loss as to the source of my high idle. Sled is a 1995 Mach 1 670 all factory no upgrades. When very first starting the sled it will within a few seconds go to a 5500-6000rpm idle to the point where it engages my clutch. First thing I thought was carbs and I have had them off 3 times and cleaned them and I also bought new needle and seats for them but didn't help. Carbs idle screw and jets are set to factory settings. I thought maybe fuel pump problem but tore that down rebuilt it and still high idle. I also checked the seal at the primary clutch and that seems to be fine. What the heck could be the cause of such a high idle. I checked the impulse line to see if there was any fuel in there that may be feeding into the engine but that was fine too. The only things that will stop the high idle is if I hit the kill switch but then as soon as I pop it back up it goes right back to 6000rpm the other thing that will decrease the rpm's is putting my hands in front of the mouth of the carbs to cut the air off. I did change all the fuel and oil lines as there were 24 years old but I didnt go with original measurements regarding ID/OD but they are very close to original size. I have noticed there are some air bubbles in my fuel lines which wasn't the case with the original lines...I cant imagine that would have anything to do with the high idle as the extra air would vent through the carburetor vent tubes correct? Any thoughts are very welcome I am baffled at this one and we finally have enough snow to ride here in northern IL Thanks much!

Pics to follow?
And now today mine is acting up!
It will cut out just as you come off idle!

Nothing?
Still does it!

Need help with CDI Part Numbers

When I look up the MFG part number for the machine, the part number is: 2201111

However, the part numbers on the two CDI's that I own are as follows

CDI 1
32388900 07 47
4010183 1

CDI 2
32388000 97 16

What to buy for first sled...

So I finally got to go riding for the first time and I've only been on two different sleds. A ski-doo 700 (between 94-97) and a Arctic Cat 580 Special 92'.

I liked the Arctic Cat for handling, mobility, still had enough speed though.

I'm looking for something that is good for trail riding but still can get up there if i want to open her up. (I hit 80 on the Arctic Cat after being on it for an hour) and that was OK.

I'm sorry it's not a lot of information to go off and even after doing my own homework, I'm not find a lot out there. But I'm looking for something that's...

Lightweight
Great Handling/Mobility
Perfect for Trail Riding
Decent acceleration, i don't want to take a 1/4 mi to hit top speed.
Can easily hit/maintain 100mph?

The 700 I was on was way to "clunky" the steering was different, little heavier. Just didn't feel right.

And I would like to stay around 5000-8000. (But if 10k is what it takes, then lets see them)

93 Exciter TORS and broken throttle??

I'm having some issues with a 93 Exciter II. It fires up and the TORS light is blinking. The throttle cables are very loose, I believe they have disconnected somewhere under the instrument panel. What do I need to remove to access the cables? Would that make the TORS light flash? The wires are all connected for the TORS system.
Sounds like it's running on one cylinder.

Polaris Indy 400 1987 Idle & Bogging

Hi,

I'm new here and to troubleshooting...

We just traded for a Polaris Indy 400 1987 and need some help.

We got it to start by spraying gas into the carbs but then it does one of two things now.

1. Won't idle. Runs for about 15 seconds then dies
2. When we give it gas, it seems to bog down at high RPM. Right around the time the clutch starts to kick in...not sure if that's related

Any help would be great - there's now tons on snow here.

Polaris Indy 700 RMK (1998) Kill Swtich

vendredi 9 février 2018

Odd thing happened today. Went on a long ride. Halft way through my ride, when I tried to hit my kill switch, my machine would not shut off. I have my key bypassed, so that was sure frustrating. When I got home, I decided to look at it. I hooked the key back up just so I would have a way to shut it down.

Steps to troubleshoot.

1) Disconnected the Black/Brown connector coming from the kill swtich.
2) Did a continuity test on the two wires coming from the switch. When in the "ON" position, it measured OPEN, when in the "OFF" positions, it measures CLOSED. This is the way it should be.
3) I took the wire that goes from the KILL switch to, I believe the stator, and tried to close them manually and it did not kill the engine.
4) Checked wires going to the CDI from the Stator, all have good solid connections

BTW, the stator is new. This was only its second ride.

Any thoughts on where to look next? Ever seen this happen? Odd!!

New to sledding

Hey all,

Bought a used 96 Polaris Indy 500 Classic, electric start, reverse. 9000+ miles and still running strong.

What is the general opinion on which brand of sled is better than another and why?

Who makes the best most reliable product?

I have read where people claim these old Fuji motors are very durable and it seems like parts are readily available.

2-stroke better or 4-stroke?

I trail ride gently and on open lakes this sled runs more than fast enough.

Anyone have a high mileage sled?

Hoods interchangeable? 96 Indy 500 Classic

Hi all,
Just wondering if the hoods from the Indy line are generally interchangeable in mounting and fit. Color and graphics not a concern, just physically interchangeable. It looks like they are from 96-03 or so.

Also what about the front bumpers? Are these Indy chassis essentially identical?

My Ovation is Not Stock, but ALWAYS runs!
Well it just died!
May be a fuel pump? But it was all wet under the carb?
Coupla Buddys stopped by the trailer for a few beers yesterday and asked,
If you think it is a fuel pump, why the heck are you removing the seat?

Well as I have preached, I am replacing ALL the fuel lines!

Wow what a mess! I bet it had 10' of hose! About the only thing Im saving is the shut off!

My last sled was a 1971 ski doo Olympic. That I had until 1980. Started snowshoeing and cross country sking and gave up snowmobiles. Now I'm old and want to ride again. Bought a 1999 Polaris rmk and 2002 800 rmk to share with my neighbor. Physically they look in good shape but I will have to go through them and make sure they are reliable. So I have acquired a 1980 whip 440 and I’ve got it to start on ether but the guy before me monkeyed around with the carb so I need the specs what to turn the screws out to for my baseline. Problem is, it’s a mikuni carb that has a butterfly valve throttle (no slide) and a common mikuni choke. I couldn’t find any numbers on the carb so does anybody have a clue what the screws should be out to for a baseline?

Secondary clutch setting

Took the secondard clutch apart on my 02 mxz 600 because the helix was stuck in the sheave. Seen it was in B6 before. I had put it in B2 because I was u sure of the stock setting. Wanting to go back to B6. My question is how far do I preload the spring in this setting ? Do I jist turn the sheave untill I get the helix and the keystock to align ? Im thinking 1/4 turn on moveable sheave ? I know theres a pound measurement for the spring preload but theres no way to attatch a scale to measure it. I want to get this correct. Thanks guys.

Low Beam Headlights not working, 2007

mardi 6 février 2018

I have a 2007 Dragon. The low beam headlights are not working, the high beams work. I was hoping for an easy fix, I changed the bulbs and it did not fix the problem. I checked with a Volt-meter and nothing.
Has anyone had this problem ?
Can I just get a switch ? or am I going to have to buy a new assembly ?

81 enticer studs..?

Just got an offer on 30 studs and backers for 10$... Now my question is.. are these too long? Will they fit in the tunnel? Etc.? It's not many studs but think it would make a big difference on hard pack and ice?. Pics attached I have the factory size track on the sled.

Yamaha starts after some snowmobileforum help

First start in about 10 years. Thanks to everyone here for the help with getting this sled fired back up. Cleaned the carbs, replaced gas lines, poured a little 2 cycle oil in the cylinders and let it sit. Fired right off on the first pull after I gave it a shot of premixed fuel in each cylinder. First couple of gallons mixed at 24:1 with ethanol free gas. Oil injection is working..

Belt causing bogging ?

lundi 5 février 2018

Hello I have an 82 Enticer with a very loose and worn oem belt in it. I go to swap it with the one that was on the cover (see pic). It does not wanna start... if it does, it’s not responsive to choke or throttle. I take off the belt and put the old oem back in and it fires right up and warms up and rides. This belt looks like exact match to size and it’s on Dennis Kirk parts list for the sled. I’m grabbing a new oem one tmr when my Yamaha dealer opens to see if it makes a difference but I don’t see how it could? I’m trying to figure out what could be the issue??

96 polaris rxl 650 triple efi issues

First off i will say i bought the sled used.. When purchased it ran fine and was in all around good shape..no issues.... It wasnt until recently the battery died (common problem ive been told) which has now led to a slew of ongoing problems. With the battery replaced the sled will fire up no problem but when i checked the plugs i noticed they were fowled... Replaced all existing plugs with new ones, fire it up with no problems idles fine but when i apply the throttle the sled seemed to be working very hard to move suddenly and after about 5 seconds of half to three quarter on the throttle it began to start emitting a thick white smoke... Does anybody have some information i can use ? Any help is appreciated

Low end torque question (timing)

dimanche 4 février 2018

I have a 1998 Polaris RMK 700. Just replaced stator. I set the timing mark to factory. Since then, checked timing with a timing light. Spec says that at 1500 RPM it should be 6 +/- 1.5 degrees. At 3500 RPM, it should be 12 +/- 1.5 degress. Nearest I can tell, it is at 8, 13.5 respectively, so I am right on the edge.

First Question, is that close enough that I should tear it down and adjust?

Now, went on my first good ride with this machine on Saturday. Ran great, but, punching it out the gate, it does not feel like the engine has much torque, but then it kicks in. See this
Second Question, could any of these be a factor?

1) Timing as described above?
2) Idle: My idle when I am at 5000 feet was around 2000 RPM. When I was up at 9000 feet, it felt like it was lower....1500 RPM. Would simply getting the idle to 2500 RPM help this situation?
3) Since this was my first ride, and I did not know if my oil pump was working, so I mixed my gas. Good news is that my pump is working, but that also means that I was running on rich gas. Could that be my problem?

Thoughts on my 2 questions?

Doing another ride on Wednesday and I was going to change the gas and get the idle up to 2500 RPM for that test.

Thanks!

1998 Polaris RMK 700 (OEM or Dayco Belt)?

I need to purchase a couple of belts for my RMK. Current one is starting to wear and don't have a spare.

I see the Dayco HPX belts for $30 cheaper than the OEM Polaris. Probably always safe to say OEM, but is there a real difference?

Thanks!

Can I have ET 340 pistons in Exciter 340?

Hi!

I have a Yamaha STX 340 from 1977, which is the same as Exciter 340 from the same year.

My pistons have only one piston ring and two piston rings is much better that one piston ring.

ET 340 from 1978 have pistons with two piston rings.

So my question is if I can have ET pistons from 1978 at my Yamaha STX 340?

John Deere Trailfire 1982 starting trouble

Hey there everyone! Snow is great outside and I really want to go out for a ride on my sled! Been trying to get this fixed for weeks but no luck so far. Any help on what I should do would be greatly appreciated! I've tried reading up on this forum and tried a lot of things before posting.

My sled is a John Deere Trailfire 82, and it's been working great for the past few years without much trouble. I changed the coil and battery last year and it's been a really easy start since then, until a few weeks ago.

What happened:
I was out riding and I accidentally emptied my gas tank completely, I was going downhill so it drove for about 20 meters after the engine stopped too (I don't know if that matters). I refilled the tank but after that it wouldn't start at all, no ignition spark what so ever.

What I've tried
  • First I tried starting with a little starting gas (spray can), and when I turned the idling screw a little to the right, it started and I drove about 1km. Next time I tried it didn't want to start at all.
  • I tried cleaning the fuel pipes with compressed air. A few tries later it started again and I could ride it for a few kilometers, but it didn't feel as strong as it has been before, it went worse and worse and finally stopped, and then it didn't want to start again.
  • A few tries later it did start but ran very badly and died several times. Here is a video of how it was running:
  • After some research I cleaned the carb, it did run but pretty much the same way. I also tried changing the spark plugs. I tried changing the idling screw a bit forward and back but couldn't notice much change. I also tried adjusting the other screw a bit (mixture screw?), but not much change there either.
Here is a video of how it's running now:

Some more details & random thoughts:
(I'm a real beginner with engines so I don't really know what I'm doing)
* I'm 100% of where the mixture screw was, but I'm not completely certain about the idling screw. Could that be the problem and how can I know where it should be? I've tried a lot of different tries with variations of where I think it was before
* Sometimes the spark plugs get a bit wet, then I pull the string a few times to dry it out. It does feel like the left spark is abit dryer than the right one.
* When no spark plugs are in and I pull the string, I usually see a puff of smoke on the left (dryer) side, but not as much on the right. Could that be something?
* The gas is all new, but when I look into the tank with a lamp I do see some small sparkling things in the gas, could that be some kind of dirt?
* When I cleaned the pipes I used compressed air, could I have damaged the gas filter?
* Maybe I didn't clean the carb well enough? I could see through all the jets and I felt I did a thorough job but I don't know.

1999 Ski Doo no start

samedi 3 février 2018

Had my 99 grand touring 583 out today finally. Upon riding it, we stopped to fish and the electric start didn't work. Didn't have any problems prior, once we got back to the truck the pull rope broke. Also the steering post isn't straight, any ideas on how to correct that? Thanks all!

Skizoom

So I purchased a Skizoom. Seller said it was a 1973 340. Thing runs like a top. My problem is, can't for the life of me figure out what or where the serial number is to register it. I have looked the tunnel over left to right, front to back, under the seat. EVERYWHERE. Only thing I can find is a 9 digit number on the motor next to the carb. Is that the number? Any help would be appreciated.

98 Kitty Cat Engine Issue?

Thanks ahead for the help on this one guys. My kids kitty cat has been running great. I bet they have close to 10 tanks of gas through it this winter already. Yesterday I pushed it outside and it started on the 3rd pull like normal. He made a couple laps at it just quit. I went down and it would not start unless I hold the throttle wide open, and it would run very hard. If I let off the throttle it quits. It pulls over a lot harder than normal as well. Any ideas before I tear into this thing?
Thanks, Jessejensen

Enticer steering and suspension

So inherited my Dad's old 1978 Yamaha Enticer 340, I finally have it running well, adjusted the brakes, cleaned the carb, got the choke working, changed chaincase oil, replaced the belt, etc. I realize that in 1978 snowmobile suspension and steering were still pretty primitive, but I am wondering if there are any simple fixes or fairly inexpensive upgrades for this machine? I really don't want to spend much on it since it's value is mainly sentimental, but the steering is especially atrocious.

I did find recently that one of the steering arms was bent, so I bent that back as straight as I could and now it does turn better.

Zoan optimus helmet vs ls2 or g64s

Hey guys, been searchin so fig to ask. I bought a cheap zoan for wife. Been using it myself few trips out, it does ok. I wear glasses and if anything my glasses fog before anything else. Looked at buying cat crap and etc. Traveling with lens cracked open works in the mild weather.

I want a helmet for me. Looking at the gmax g64s as i dont like the breath guard on the zoan. Otherwise the zoan seems great. One deal with the gmax is the d ring chin strap, the ls2 and zoan have quick release.

My biggest thing is if i go heated shield on zoan its not to bad price wise, 80 more on gmax and idk if shield is needed. Anyone use the ls2? It has a breath guard similar to the gmax plus quick release
Opinions? Thanks guys

The two-week weekend project

So, we had great snow for a couple weeks at the end of last year, but that dried up (at least down here in the foothills), so I decided to complete the track/skid swap and upgrade a few parts while I was at it. I was planning on doing it last fall, but ended up working into December to get my house closed in, and then the fluffy snow was too good to ignore. As it turns out, I'm overdue to dig in and replace some parts and pieces: the speedo died in Dec, the driveshaft didn't seem too loose, but after getting it apart the bearing was definitely in full failure mode (the one on the 800 I'm parting is the same way).

Anyway, the things I'm doing / have done are:
Track and skid swap to a home ported and windowed 144 (from the 800).
Shock swap to RydeFX clickers.
Swap to SLP PowderPro skis I got used
Replace all drive bearings (except the clutch side jack-shaft bearing – feels like new and it's easy to monitor anyway).
Replace bent lower radius arms and shift to narrower ski stance.
Coolant flush and brake fluid service.
Upgrade to SLP adjustable clutch weights – my tach reads a few hundred high, but I've seen over 8500! Should be 8000 +/- 200
Full cleanout and new grease for all pivot points –*decided to switch to Mobil aviation grease
Replacing some bushings and grommets and such.

Since I had the track out, I decided to experiment with some porting and open the closed windows. I just went with two rows of 1-1/4 holes alternating sides, the theory being that if I keep them each behind a lug I'll maximize snow cleanout and minimize floatation loss. Everything seems to take longer than expected with these things, but the thing that's got me nearly beside myself is trying to adjust the tie rods for the narrower front. I got one side to adjust in where it needed to be, but the other got to the point where it was impossible to turn. I tried to go back out, thinking maybe I could get it apart and clean up the threads, but then it just snapped the rod end. No problem, I'll just use the ones off the parts sled. The inner rod end comes right apart; the outer one: jammed up just as bad as the one that broke.

I really hate aluminum sometimes. With steel, heat and oil will always get it loose eventually, but seems like once aluminum gets sticky, there's no clean way out. I managed to get one of the broken pieces out by heating the tie rod. Thing is, it basically destroyed the threads in the process. Makes me wonder if I should just buy a new set and be done with it. As it stands, I've got one more shot with the parts sled, although I might be able to improvise if I can get a clean outer rod end. You can bet it'll be slathered with anti-seize before it goes back together; I always make it a point to use anti-seize on threads into aluminum, and I just wish manufacturers would be as generous!

No power when in gear. Can it be a belt?

I got Aktiv Panther Lång '85 recently and it does have rather annoying problem - when I press gas, it has almost no power when in gear, it doesn't go to high RPM. It is better when cold, after some time driving it can't get uphill. I suspect the belt. Can it be something else?

It goes like this - deeper snow or uphill - "jumps" forward few cm/inches, RPM goes down, RPM goes up a little, moves forward few cm. All while I hold the gas steadily.

When I am in neutral, RPM goes up normally.

First start in 7 years

I recently acquired a couple older late 80's and early 90's oil injected snowmobiles. Neither of them has been started for 7-8 years. My question is, should I put some 2 cycle oil or something similar down the spark plug holes before I try to start them for the first time? They both ran but were put away, just sat in a shed all those years.
Carbs have all been torn down and cleaned well with fresh gas..
