I'm going to make a good effort to journal what I have going on with my 1979 Yamaha Exciter. Perhaps it will help others, and if I get stuck, this seems like a good place to ask for help.
This 79 Exciter was purchased new from the dealership by my father - and we've had it in the family all along. In general, over the years, it's been in decent shape and has been kept up on a family farm for general use by the family. Last year (2017), my daughter was riding on the snowmobile, just a ways from the farm and the steering suddenly came loose, so she stopped and waved over her uncle (my brother-in-law) who was riding with her. My brother-in-law traded sleds with my daughter and attempted to limp the Exciter back to the farm, however, the steering came complete 100% disconnected and with that, the throttle pulled tight and the sled went wide open, bucking off my brother-in-law. The Exciter went a ways before hitting a ditch, crossing a road (almost hitting a car driving by), and landed upside down at a tree line.
Nobody was hurt, so that's the good part of the story. The Exciter however, as you might imagine, had seen much better days.
My brother-in-law picked up the pieces, and pulled the Exciter back to the farm, and found out the steering post/stem broke (top part). The tube of the steering handle, that is welded to the coupler and attached with the three bolts, had broken off. Scary!
My brother-in-law, he put as much of the sled back together as he could, and actually had it fired up and driving around the farm, however, without a hood, smashed belly pan, all the cables, and lights of course were ripped off, the seat was torn up, basically, unrecognizable from pre-accident.
There were some discussions about just selling the Exciter for parts because there were so many things to fix otherwise - however, I'm a little sentimental about this snowmobile, so I packed it up, and hauled it to my home in West Michigan with the goal of putting it back together and keeping it alive.
I'm going to document what I'm doing, post some pictures, perhaps ask for some help/guidance to get this ol girl back out in the snow.
