Hello Everybody

Hi all. I’m from North Eastern Saskatchewan. I have a temperamental 2000 Yamaha Enticer II 410cc (reason for joining this forum) and a seized 1984 Yamaha Enticer 300. Looking to find lots of knowledge and help on the forum.

Sled dolly

Now that most of hunting season is over, it's time to get busy building a sled dolly so I can move the pigs around and get em running. I picked up about 40' of 1" square running to get started on the build. I'll try to get some pics since go along. The plan is to have it be adjustable width so I can use it for multiple things.

1998 700 XC Idling/Starting Problem

I bought this snowmobile during the summer. I have been storing it for the last couple of months and at least once per month I have gone out and started it. It has been hard to start and if I do get it started normally I have to keep it on the half choke for it to keep running. When I do try to idle without choke it normally dies or idles at such a low RPM that when I try to throttle it dies. It is making a coughing sound when running and when attempting to start. What should I do?

Also, unrelated to the starting problem, when I do get it running after a minute or so there is a whining sound coming from where I would think the belt is located.

PLEASE HELP ME! I can post the videos of the sounds it is making to my Youtube since I don't know how to add them to this post...... New to forums.....

Coughing sound: https://youtu.be/Fte8P4N0W5w It makes the sound on the second and fifth pull.

Done that, closed the top end back!!! Then when i checked compression i has 125 on one cylinder that i found was great!!! checked the other one and it was at 95 to 100...!!! can it be run like that for this winter...as it is just for around the yard!!! or i need to replace maybe piston...or oversise

1973 cheetah 440cc

Hi everyone. I have a '73 cheetah with the kawi 440. It does the typical run for 30 minutes and die routine. Seals are good, clutch is good, points are good and gapped properly, compression is 120psi on both. Its definitely the carb. HD16A in it now but I'm thinking of changing to a mikuni 34mm. Does anyone have experience and or suggestions for this swap?
Thanks!
Joe

Triple carb set up , clean carbs , log gong jet sizes found right and center carb jet # 146.3 and left # 148.8 , shouldn’t the larger jet be in the center. FYI just picked up sled, the guy said it would idle , but not rev. 1st carb clean found float seat stuck. Sled idle sporadic but reved up great , got a kit for mounting max 700 all I could find, for gaskets . Sled apart right now so can’t test,

High idle issue 86 Polaris indy 400

mercredi 28 novembre 2018

I have an old 86 indy 400 that ran great last year. I had it running I'm the garage today just to start getting her ready for the season. It ran fine at first, shut her down. After 20 minutes or so I started the machine up again and now it idles at 4000rpm. Is this normal? Throttle cables seem fine, had carbs cleaned and tuned last year, besides that nothing has changed except for a new plastic throttle/killswitch assembly on the handlebars. Any ideas???

Castro’s 2T oil on sale.

Found this at Walmart.

They had 11 qts in stock so I bought all 11. I researched oil 3 years ago and bought a full case for $60 IIRC? That’s $5 a qt. So this was a great deal. Works great in my sleds.

1994 skidoo mx 470 bogs on takeoff

Hey guys. New here
Got a little issue with the sled I bought. I have 1 throttle cable splits off into 3 cables. 2 go to the carb slides and im told the 3rd goes to the oil pump. There is a external spring attached to an arm which is attached to the end of the throttle cable. When push the throttle everything is good but when i let the throttle go the arm for the oil pump doesnt return all the way back. Need a new spring? Or could be internal. I moved it with my hand and it seems all smooth. Is the spring shot? Also i adjusted the air screws on the carb to 1 and 1/2 but havent tried the sled to see if that fixed the bogging problem. Kinda got 2 problems here haha. Thanks guys
Any input is appreciated

So a buddy of mine had his sks under about two feet of water for a couple hours today as he nose dived off of a creek bank. Immediately shut it off and within 3 hours got it inside a heat shop and pulled the plugs and pulled the cord until all the water came out. Any other tips or tricks or things to do too make sure it has a chance at survival?

We have a 1997 Ziema snowmobile trailer for sale. It tilts back to allow loading of 2 sleds, and the two front panels drop down into ramps for driving off the trailer. It has been lightly used, and the tow light wiring needs a new plug wired on to plug into your truck's trailer light plug. But, the lights and wiring are installed, just the wires terminate at the tow hitch with no plug. Located in the San Francisco Bay Area (east bay). $500 or best offer. Drops out at high load

Hey All, I am new to this forum, but look forward being a part of it! I have a 2003 Polaris XC 600 with the liberty twin and the flat slide carbs. When i bought it in 2009 it had a top end bog that i didn't know how to deal with so i brought it to the local guy I use. He said the reed petals were bad on the factory intake reeds. He replaced them with some composite aftermarket reed petals and the sled ran great for several years after. Fast forward to the last two years and the top end bog slowly started repeating itself. What i mean by that is that it bogs out under load (deep snow). On the flat trail you can feather the throttle and get it past the hump. I tried buying some used (good shape) stock reed valves from a local used parts dealer and that actually helped, but not all the way. Last year i ended up buying some Boyesen dual stage reeds and tried those. The problem got way worse. I have worked on sleds my whole life but admit that carburetors are not my thing...hence why i am here. I did take apart and clean the exhaust valves and confirmed they are working properly. I also rebuilt both clutches thinking that could be the problem...to no avail. Everything on the sled is in top condition except this issue. So i have to believe it is a carb/intake reed issue. The instructions on the Boyeson reed package says that the reeds could make the main jet run rich and the pilot jet run lean. I am guessing i need to change jets, but have never done that before and am not sure what jets to buy. I am certain i could get the carbs out, i know where the jets are, but no idea how to change them or again...what size to buy.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks!

What is my sled?

Hey folks. I grew up on sleds in the 80s, but haven't ridden much since then. I fell into a 95 RXL recently that is in pretty good shape from what I can tell. I've been bouncing around on different forums and what not reading what I can find, but I'm not exactly sure what my sled is. Just says RXL fuel injected tripple on the hood. The suspension just says xtra on the trailing arms. Would it be xtra 10, xtra 12? How do I tell?

Model number is 0956768
Serial no. is 2441025

Engine is not a monoblock, and the heads are silver. The sled seems to be unmolested. It starts on the second or third pull every time I've started it, and sounds like it runs well. Waiting for snow to fall here to get the rest of the story.

Any help or information is much appreciated

1998 Polaris xlt fuel leakage and won’t start

Hi I last week purchased a 98 Polaris xlt 600 with 700 miles for $1200. It seemed like a good deal, test drove it and ran great but idled high ish at 2k. So I changed the isle to have it idle at 1600 but it did not run well. So I changed it back to idle at around 2000, put new plugs in, and added a new air filter which it needed. So I drove it after that and it seemed to run well again it stil idled a bit high but I expected that. So I gave it a break and went to drive it tonight. I went out, tried starting it, and it wouldn’t, but the very first pull it almost did, and after that, there was no luck. So I checked everything I suspected for it to not start, and everything seemed normal except one thing; there was a small leakage of gas and oil I believe. I know it’s gas and I believe there’s some oil in it. The leak is located by a crease near the exhaust manifold, but the manifold has nothing to do with it, just a reference. So that crease by the exhaust manifold is a line of fuel running through out the crease. I think there’s something majorly wrong and that’s why it won’t start, but hopefully it not starting and the leakage are not related. It’s not like gas is pouring out, but just a little wetness. Any ideas on what this may be will be greatly appreciated. I tried inserting pic and hopefully you can tell where exactly the leak is. Please ask for more pictures if needed, but it’s 9pm and I can’t get a great picture, but I’ll try to upload more tomorrow. Thanks for your time and opinions.

Hello from Michigan

Been out of the riding scene for about 14-15 years now. Just bought an older Yamaha XTC 600 last year in order to ride with my brother at his cabin. I posted a tech question in case anyone owns an older Yamaha and can be of assistance. Thanks and happy riding this winter.

Chain case removal issue 97 Yamaha XTC 600

Trying to change my track, and on this sled it actually requires the entire chain case be completely removed. I have removed the guts of the case and removed all the bolts. I feel like it should just slide off the secondary shaft and jack shaft, but the chain case still seems to be attached to the secondary shaft. Anyone else run into this problem or know what I'm missing? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Need of advice to choose my first sled

Hello guys&girls,
I am on the way to buy myself my first sled (used of course....) and after looking what's on the market around me, I'm going to choose one from these two :
https://www.snowmobile.com/specs/pol...144-inch-.html
https://www.snowmobile.com/specs/ski...-800-h-o-.html

My main griteria are:
-reliability;
-maintenance costs and spare parts;
- Fuel economy.
Since I am not experienced sledder, the both would be powerful enough for me....
The Polaris has only pull start and the ski-doo has pull&electric.
The height class of the Polaris is low and the height class of the ski-doo ist middle. Does this means the ski-doo has better maneuvering?
Тhank you in advance for your help!

Idle isues

Hello everyone I'm new to this site and kinda new to snowmobiles. I have a 1999 Arctic cat zl440 liquid cooled with low miles. I have a high idle problem. Idles between 3500-4500 fully warmed up and will only do 50. If I choke it quick and take the choke right off idles at 1500 but as soon as you touch the gas being light or wot it goes back up and stays up till you choke it and take it back off. Also noticed that even when it idles at 1500 its boggy when you hit the throttle. Any help would greatly be appreciated it's time to start the season again

(RANT) City puts roadblocks up every winter to block Snowmobiles / Cars.

I know this isn't really a Snowmobile related question to some, but to me it is. I live right next to a little trail about 100 yards long that goes from my house right down to a road where I can cross to get onto the local lake and the trail systems around here. Every year the city puts up road blocks down at the end of the trail blocking cars (at least I originally thought) and snowmobiles from getting on / off that little trail. There is only 3 houses that border up against it including me, a farmer, and one of my other neighbors. All of us don't care who use it and we ourselves use it for various reasons. In the summer they sometimes take the barricades down and I am able to drive my suv and yamaha dual sport up and down it with no issues. but come winter they are able to see vehicle tracks and put them down. Last year on my sled I would just drive around them and get on the lake because I thought they were trying to deter trucks and cars, but the one time I tried to cross the road again they moved the barricades to block off my snowmobile tracks! leaving an open spot for vehicles to just go through. They never started to put them up until about 6 years ago some kid who just got his license took a big u-haul truck and was flying through the trail hitting a small little bump and catching air. Well some of my old neighbors, who moved away called the police and they put up barricades to block the path. this past summer the farmer had to move the road blocks to get his tractor through the trail and stopped to talk to me about it. we both dislike the barricades and have to move or go around them every time we need to pass through. I would like to contact the city and tell them that everyone who lives around the path uses it and doesn't care about the minuscule amount of traffic that passes through anyways. or do you think that would be a bad idea and should not bring it up to their attention? I can deal with movable barricades but wire fences are another thing if they decided to go that far to prevent vehicle traffic. What would you guys do?

92 Arctic Cat Lynx 340

I got a 92 lynx 340 and it worked fine when I shut it off last spring. I tried gas in plugs, it runs fine till it burns off the fuel. I checked the lines. Checked the fuel pump, it seemed to be running fine but I read a post to open it up and clean it. If you think it would help, please let me know. I pulled the carb out and opened the bottom/top up and cleaned with throttle body spray. I added new gas. I by passed the throttle safety mechanism. Seems to get good air intake. I also changed the plugs. It would run longer when I put throttle cleaner in the carb when I tried starting by putting a bit of fuel in the spark plug holes. After I took the carb off and cleaned it, the sled started but only holding the gas on a bit and choking it. I warmed it up for 10 mins and I could take choke off but had to rev it for it to stay running. then I was able to drive it full throttle across lawn and across the road(35 secs probably) and it bogged out and idle for 5 sec when I stopped then shut off. It seems that it is starving for fuel. I opened the idle thing on the side of carb up but it made it worse so I put it back where it was. same as the cable at the top of the carb, I opened it up and it made it worse so I put it back. I made sure my throttle cable wasn't bent or tight and not moving with handle bars. It all seemed fine. I tried everything I could to my knowledge, which is not much, considering I am not a mechanic I know it could be lots of things, but any help on this would be very nice. Thanks

600 triple and 580 efi resurrection

So I've sort of inherited these. My sled experience is on a Kawasaki drifter as a kid but it made me a power sports junkie for life.

I've got some fresh gas, starting fluid and basic tools. They are both 97's I think. The 580 is efi and I'm guessing the battery is totally dead, how will that effect things pull starting, jumping it, running? The 600 is a little rougher with a home made choke pull system that seems seized.

Any tricks to getting the last of the old gas out of tanks and system to start totally fresh? What's the fuel pump system like on these? I know those can gum up and stick with the damn ethanol.

Thanks in advance for any input!

Loosing my mind here. I recently bought this beast of a machine. I bring it home and start on some maintainance as it looked a little neglected. I did the oil change, changed the plugs and just made sure everything looked right. Get it all back together and go take it for a test right and i noticed the air fuel was reading lean. Cant figure out why. I touched nothing other than doing a tune up. Got it back home and pulled the plugs and sure enough she had been running hot. Any ideas of what may have happened during tune up?? Thanks

Wierd issue with skidoo Mxz 500

Hey guys I have a 2001 Skidoo Mxz 500 that I am having issues with. The sled will run fine for about 15 mins then engine starts to bog down until it eventually shuts down. If you leave it sit for a little it will run fine again for a little. The other week I actually rode for about 10 miles without out it doing it, but I never gave the sled full throttle as soon as I did it started to bog down and died. I originally thought it was the stator, so I replaced that but it did not fix the issue. One of my friends suggested that the fuel pump could be bad. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

1998 ski Doo mxz 440F

lundi 19 novembre 2018

I bought this sled a couple years ago and it's been an awesome snowmobile, she is tuned in and will hit about 90 with my fat ass on it. She has 5500 miles on her now. I am curious what the HP is on it, I also have an Arctic cat z440 same year but this ski Doo blows it right out of the snow. The acceleration is crazy compared to the Arctic cat, the cat tops about 75 on a good cold day. Why is the ski Doo so much faster and what's the HP.

Snowmobile Hill Torque/Traction issue.

Hey guys, I live in a neighborhood full of other houses but lucky for me our house is on the end of the street and borders up against a little path about 50 yards away from the local lake. From there I have access to Minnesota's trail system and the ability to ride to my friends houses and group up on our sleds. Between the area I get on the lake and that little path is a some-what busy 30mph road and the area is between 2 other property's and is a small little bit of unused land. Its easy to get onto the lake but the issue is when I need to get back home. there is a pretty steep little hill you have to go up and then you are right on the road. Well last year I would just check the road both ways while I was still on the lake then just gun it up the hill that is about 8 feet tall and 30 degrees steep. Wasn't a big deal till one day I did this and had a pretty close call with a speeding car that I didn't see coming before I checked. I made it across safely but I don't want to risk it this year. I would like to be able to drive up the hill and stop at the top and then cross, but I am positive the snowmobile will lose traction and get stuck. I guess I will have to try it this year. I will upload a pic so you guys can see what I am talking about.

TL;DR: I need to be able to stop at the crest of a steep, but small hill and check for traffic before I can cross a road. I don't think I will be able to get going again after stopping. I will try this year but snowmobiles don't seem to have the torque an atv has, which I am positive would be able to make it up with ease. Is it because of the CVT transmission in a sled? The picture below is what I am talking about.

Purchasing a machine

jeudi 15 novembre 2018

Purchasing a machine Hello, I am interested in purchasing a new snow machine for recreation. Haven’t had a machine in about 30 years. I have found a 1986 arctic cat El Tigré that appears to be in very good physical condition with about 3200 miles. Unfortunately it is been sitting for a number of years as the person who owned it passed away in 2011. Even though it’s an older. is machine worth investing in a few hundred dollars into for purchase?

Thank you in advance for your comments

Hey guys!

I just bought this 1968 Omc Snowcruiser and am in need of information! I bought this thing for 50$ and it turns out all the bogies and suspension parts are new, the track is in good shape and there is not a crack in the hood. The only problem is I have no idea where to find parts or information on this machine, The main part I need is a full recoil assembly or a little piece to fix mine, It has opposed cylinders.

Thanks for any info you have!

Looking for insight on 2 sleds.

Good morning, I am new to the snowmobiling world and recently picked up two sleds and a trailer for next to nothing. The sleds were garage stored for about 15 years. I'm looking for some help to get them running again. Please delete this thread if this is not allowed.

The first is a 1986 I believe Yamaha Phazer.

the second I believe is a 1989 Ski Doo formula Mach 1.

Both sleds Motors turn when pulled, I drain the gas out of each and put fresh gas in. Both the Phazer and the Mach 1 start it up immediately after. The Mach One then bugged out and is not started sense. I'm assuming it's carb related.

The Phazer started and was able to run for about a month but has sense done the same and stopped.

I'm assuming both are carb related, or that's at least where I should start, although I'm not really sure if there's any other things I should be checking out as well. Like I said I'm very new to the whole snowmobiling world.

97 vmax600 please help!

mercredi 14 novembre 2018

Purchased a 97 Yamaha vmax 600 xtc overall nice sled. The sled has 2800 miles on it and has been sitting for last 2 years. The co-worker I bought it from says it ran perfect when he parked it. I cleaned it up carbs inside and out,put new gas and plugs in. The sled has good spark and getting good gas but will not fire unless I use ether or give it has into the cylinders. It'll fire on that and stall out but that's it! Could it be the tps? Cdi box and still have spark? No idea what else to try anyone with a guess let me know please and thank you!

Sled tie downs?

So, we have a enclosed trailer, which has the standard bars that screw down the front skis on the sleds. Once I get one side on, it is a pain to tie the other side down. Is there a better way to secure the sleds? Some type of clamp?

Hood & Vents for '83-'87 Polaris Snowmobile

I have a Factory blemish Polaris Hood that was sold locally at Central Snowmobile before they went out of business. I bought it in 2002 and had it redone buy a body shop up here in Wisconsin. They fiber-glassed all the blemishes in the hood then did 3-4 coats of primer along with another 3 coats of glossy black paint with 2 coats of clear-coat. All told I have about 400 dollars in it. I know in the pictures it looks dusty and what not as that is from sitting down in my basement for years. I know it doesn't look like it in the pictures but I assure you it is very nice looking. If I get the chance I will clean it up and post updated pictures.

I am asking $275 obo and you will have to pick up or I can meet you a hour in any direction from near Lena, Wisconsin.

I also have the very hard to find vents that are supposed to be in the hood. I will throw those in for free, as anyone know those are NLA.

Please private message me if you are interested and have an offer! Thanks in advance!

Hi Everyone

break stuck / primary clutch removal

Hi guys,

Trying to start my 2001 xcr 800 for the upcoming season. Ill admit Im terrible at storing it. I have noticed my track is suck and I think its from the break. I loaded up a ton of break cleaner and anti seize. Do I have to remove the exhaust system and chain case to check the break calipers?

Also I was going to grease the jackshaft but I cannot get my grease gun on the nipple behind the secondary clutch. Do I have to remove the clutch? Can the clutch stay in one piece or be loosened off enough so I can access the grease nipple?

Can u guys recommend a good service manual?

Thanks a bunch !

1970 Yamaha SL338 speedo / tach

lundi 12 novembre 2018

Hey all, just picked up a 70 SL338 for nothing and while I am not too familiar with these old Yamaha's. It doesn't have a speedo and tach. I was wondering if any of these early SL338's came stock with them? The wiring harness is a hack job so I will probably be rewiring it anyways.
There has to be a few Yamaha guru's for these old sleds on here that could help! Thanks.

1999 Indy 700 RMK running problem "Revised"

I made a mistake in describing what happens I was told and I did mess up. It runs fine for a half hour to 45 minutes, then it would slow down bog down even with the throttle wide open and wouldn't power itself. When we came to a stop it wouldn't rev up enough to kick the clutch in. Then when we would pull it for a short time it would start running fine again for at least an hour plus or minus. Then it would do it again? The sled has less than 1000 miles on it.

97 ext 580 efi trouble and hi there

Hi all just want to say thanks for letting me join you on this great site.
I was hoping to find some info about the stator on my 97 AC Ext 580 efi.
Does anyone know what the ohm values are for the stator?
The stator only has 3 yellow wires coming out of it, have found values for other stators but this one has been tough to find.
Bought this sled not running as a project and had fuel pump issues.
Repaired the pump and got it running.
I decided to reconnect all the safety switches that the previous owner disabled but must have done something wrong.
Lost my spark and the fuel pump doesn't cycle and the ECU doesn't flash the single check flash.
Doesn't appear to have the inline fuse I've read about.
So I'm thinking it may be the stator.

The stator is Arctic Cat Stator # 3005-053

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

2004 VE bogie wheels?

Got the new (to me) 144 Vertical Edge 600 and they gave me a extra set of wheels and I noticed just one plastic wheel off center inside on the back of the track. Trying to figure out if there should be two of the wheels on the inside back axle shaft at the rear. There is a wheel on the outside of the skids on both sides. Trying to figure out where the extra wheels should be mounted. I think the previous owner removed the wheels and mounted some scratchers, in place.

So should I leave the wheels off or remount them and move the scratchers back a bit.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Weird idle when hot

Hey all so I went up to my cousins today and decided to rip the sled up and down the field a few times for the first time since buying it. It’s an 03.5 Blair Morgan 800. It over heated which I expected it to due to the lack of snow even though it was 35 degrees. What scared the hell out of me was when I came back into the driveway and let off the throttle the sled just kept on trucking and almost put me into the back of my parked car. Possible surging and the idle was at 3500-4K. Before I rode it, it idled fine.

When I started it a little while later to back it into the garage again it idled fine, as soon as it started to overheat the rpms went haywire again sitting super high. Sled seems to run strong, previous owner put VForce 3 reeds in it. Also claimed the motor was rebuilt from the crank up under 800 miles ago. Any ideas what could have caused this? I was hoping it was just the effects of over heating but after a little research I’m not so sure anymore. Any advice helps.

Secondary Clutch diameter

So iam finally back to working on the old ditch b*tch. Last time I posted it was a question about spring color in the secondary. So now my new problem that i need help with.

The used secondary clutch that i picked up, is larger in diameter. I didnt realize it until now. I had forgotten to take my old one with me. So i googled the number on the back and it comes up as a secondary for a 99 RMK 800.

Can i use this one and use a longer belt? Or do i need a different one?

I have a 99 Indy 700 RMK with under 1000 miles on it. Just last year it would start just fine, Run great for about an hour or two, give or take of riding, then all of a sudden when we came to a stop it would die and we could not get it to start again. We would hook up to it and start pulling back to the truck and within a short time it would start again and run fine all the way back to the truck. This is my daughter's sled and we really don't trust it to go on long hauls. Don't want to get way in the backcountry and have it die and not start at all. What could be wrong with it?

87 safari 377 lights dimming when revving

vendredi 9 novembre 2018

Hi, I just purchased an 87 safari, starts easy and runs great, but when I rev it up the headlights dim. It has electric start but the battery is dead.
I dont care if the electric start works or not as long as it starts easy and runs well. Is this just a voltage regulator that needs to be replaced or could the dead battery be causing the issue? If it's the battery is there a way to just eliminate the battery? Its dumping snow here right now so I would like to get this sled ready to go asap. Happy sledding!

92 Indy 340 Pros? Cons?

Hey all.

Still kinda fresh here and to the sled community. Picking up a 92 Polaris Indy 340 tomorrow. Owner told me either the carb needs to be cleaned or the fuel pump needs to be replaced but starts with some gas put in the carb or some ether sprayed in.
I want some opinions on these machines. This will be my second sled bought and I’m getting a hell of a deal on it for my area. Pros? Cons? Just wanna know what I’m getting myself into. Thanks 🤙🏻

91 Panther Deluxe smoking

Hey y’all.
So I’m new to the snowmobile community. This is the first sled I’ve ever owned. Originally being from the southern states (South Carolina) sled weren’t really a thing as we didn’t have snow down there until after moving to Maine.
I just picked up a 1991 Panther Deluxe 440. Every time I start it up it smokes like a sid. I’ll let it run for about 3 minutes and it stops smoking. Soon as I give it some throttle and she starts moving she starts smoking again. Could the oil pump be sending to much oil at once? Currently I have no battery in it.

I’ll answer as much as I know about it. Thanks in advance.

1976 Skidoo Olympic Plus VIN number location help needed

Hi, we used to have a 1976 Skidoo Olympic Plus 440 snowmobile my dad bought new in 1976. It was stolen from us in 1993. We believe we have finally located the snowmobile but want to make sure it was once ours. I know the VIN tag is located on the right side back outside tunnel, but just in case the tag has been removed, is anyone aware where the VIN number (if at all) would be stamped in the body? Any help is greatly appreciated. I have attached a photo of what the sled looks like.

Hyfax for a Frankenstein

mercredi 7 novembre 2018

So I bought a Mountain Max as sled to just modify for fun. They go forever, fast, whatever.
Anyway. The sled has been modified prior.
The tunnel seems to be from an arctic cat. I am assuming that the skid is also from an arctic cat.
I bought a pair of hyfax for an arcic cat and holy SH#! is it tight and hard to put on. I was able to get one after many many hits with a mallet.
It did not fit well. Really does not look like it goes
The bottom of the skid it an upside down T shape.

Question is, how do I know what to get when I don't know the skid that is in there?
Also, how tight are these supposed to fit?

Thanks all for the help.

BTW, I beat the crap out of the second hyfax after not being able to fit it. So I have to buy another one

Handlebar Warmer Wiringdlebar

Arctic Cat Cougar, 1986 - 500cc

I rigged aftermarket handlebar warmers and used the existing wiring. What happens is the resistor gets crazy hot on low, and on high the tach and headlight go out. Well, the headlight has about 5% brightness, but the tach is gone.

I used the same power lead and ground wires, so I don't get what could be messing up the circuit. I think the warmers I used are for a 12V system, which I do not have - no battery, so it runs on AC, but I thought that would not matter.

79 Everest

Just purchased a 1979 Everest with a 503 in it. Waiting for the carb boots to come in. Is there anything I should know as this is my first twin always run a elan with a single cylinder

91 Polaris Indy 500 hard pull

Hey folks,
First post after intro and i was hoping for a little help getting my old sleds up and running for the season. Have a pair of indy 500 classics, i said old, a 91 and 93. Both new to me late last year. The 93 ran ok and the 91 went about 200 yards and bogged and died. Was still able to take the kids out a few times and they loved it.
Summer came and i was able to get at them for my first time.
New fuel lines
Clean carbs replaced needles and seats
Replaced spark plug caps NGK
Replaced plugs BR8ES
Replaced throttle cable
Replaced choke cable
Set idle and synced carbs
Set choke and throttle cables
Redo carbs to remove A**zon needles and seats back to originals due to leaking
Checked fuel filters and lines in tanks
Installed fuel filter and shutoff inline on 91
Removed fuel filter and shutoff inline on 91 to fit airbox back on
Checked compression 120 psi for both cylinders on 91 and 118psi both cylinders on the 93
New fuel premix 40:1 premium, as i was told both machines have the oil injection disabled
2 - 4 cycles on each sled of getting up to operating temperature then draining the cylinders with the plugs under the exhaust y-pipe.
Probably other things i am forgetting. Any suggestions are more then welcome.

ALL PROCESSES COMPLETED WITH SIGNIFICANT LURKING ON THIS FORUM!!!!!

THANKS ALL!!!

Now for the results and questions.

1993
Runs great after slight idle adjustments.
Starts cold (5C currently) with 1/2 choke 1 pull with 2 fingers.
Victory for now.

1991
Runs great after same few minor adjustments
Takes 10 or more pulls to start
Takes 2 hands to pull full force even when eventually started and warm.
I am small and weak just so we are clear, but this is still extreme.
Carbs are not dumping fuel into the engine from what i can tell. I have removed the cylinder drains several times with very little result.
I have rebuilt the recoil on both machines and the spring seems shorter on this machine. I can't see this making the pull harder....maybe shorter.
Sled is hard to turn over at +10C temperature so its not frozen.
Still hard to pull over with plugs out

Sorry for the long post. Just trying to include as much info as i can.

Questions.....AKA Where to start.
Buy a new spring for the recoil..thats cheap. Swaping recoils from another sled is free?
Should I pull the belt off? I'm pretty confident the rest moves smoothly, but just to eliminate it (not that it's catching)? Maybe spin both clutches (on the 2 seperate machines) to see if there is a different feel from that side of the machine (plugs out).
Not really worried about the number of pulls to start it right now, more the force required to turn it over.
When it first bogged when i got it, it was dumping fuel out the exhaust. I am worried maybe a bent connecting rod or something. Being a parent I always think worst case scenario.

Any thoughts you folks might have are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hoping for good snow this year!!!!!

Hey folks, Mike from southeastern Ontario here. Just getting back into sledding after too many years of city living. Picked up some pretty old sleds near the end of last year and working on getting them back into shape. I like to fix up old stuff that takes way more money then its worth and i will never get back. Combine that with a love of shiney tools, lack of experience, but decent common sense.....I think, will probably result is some interesting questions posted.
Now off to find the tech thread for some help.......

Thanks

1979 Yamaha Exciter 440 Crashed

I'm going to make a good effort to journal what I have going on with my 1979 Yamaha Exciter. Perhaps it will help others, and if I get stuck, this seems like a good place to ask for help.

This 79 Exciter was purchased new from the dealership by my father - and we've had it in the family all along. In general, over the years, it's been in decent shape and has been kept up on a family farm for general use by the family. Last year (2017), my daughter was riding on the snowmobile, just a ways from the farm and the steering suddenly came loose, so she stopped and waved over her uncle (my brother-in-law) who was riding with her. My brother-in-law traded sleds with my daughter and attempted to limp the Exciter back to the farm, however, the steering came complete 100% disconnected and with that, the throttle pulled tight and the sled went wide open, bucking off my brother-in-law. The Exciter went a ways before hitting a ditch, crossing a road (almost hitting a car driving by), and landed upside down at a tree line.

Nobody was hurt, so that's the good part of the story. The Exciter however, as you might imagine, had seen much better days.

My brother-in-law picked up the pieces, and pulled the Exciter back to the farm, and found out the steering post/stem broke (top part). The tube of the steering handle, that is welded to the coupler and attached with the three bolts, had broken off. Scary!

My brother-in-law, he put as much of the sled back together as he could, and actually had it fired up and driving around the farm, however, without a hood, smashed belly pan, all the cables, and lights of course were ripped off, the seat was torn up, basically, unrecognizable from pre-accident.

There were some discussions about just selling the Exciter for parts because there were so many things to fix otherwise - however, I'm a little sentimental about this snowmobile, so I packed it up, and hauled it to my home in West Michigan with the goal of putting it back together and keeping it alive.

I'm going to document what I'm doing, post some pictures, perhaps ask for some help/guidance to get this ol girl back out in the snow.

1978 Yamaha Enticer 250 clutch help

I have an old enticer which I believe has a clutch problem. The four weights in the clutch cap I guess throw out with rising rpms push the cam washer down and compress the spring. ( let me know where I go wrong with my analysis) It has four weights but two of them have holes in the end and two have plugs. Is this normal or the reason its not working right? Any and all help appreciated!!!

'97 Indy 500 Gearing & Clutching

dimanche 4 novembre 2018

New to the forum but used the forum to search for stuff in the past. I have a '97 Indy 500 I picked up a 3 years ago with only 1900 miles on it. Got it for $600 dollars and this thing is in mint condition as the other owner didn't ride much and he took really good care of it. Since I have had it I've had the carbs gone through & synced as the sled sat for 2 years, replaced the fuel pump as a precaution along with all fuel lines & fuel filter. Replaced primary spring with a EPI white, put in a EPI purple secondary and for the Helix I used a EPI QA2 progressive helix with iirc 4 angles on it, have the same helix in my other '98 Indy 440 and it made a big difference. Along with Kimpex plastic ski's with 6" carbides & 96 studs.

My question is what gearing should I be using on this sled? And what weights as they are they stock Polaris weights. I'm not looking for something that keeps up with a 600 or 700. I just want it to be reliable which those Fuji engines are, quick on the trails as that is what we mostly ride except for a lake or two here in Wisconsin. Right now it does bog now and then and I think it is because of the gearing being stock. I'd like to make it accelerate just a little bit more nothing extreme. I've been riding snowmobiles since I was 2 or 3 and I am 41 now. But the one thing I have never messed with is gearing. So idk where to even start on choosing the right gears for it.

Thank you in advance to anyone who can help me!

Cold weather

Hello,

New to snowmachines. Here in Alaska. Both sleds are working. Have had them for two seasons but not able to ride much the first year. They both stay outside on a trailer covered with two layers. Just wondering about one of them in particular that gives me a hard time. Have two machines. 1st 2016 Ski-Doo Tundra 4 stroke 600 ACE, liquid cooled. Normally no issues with that one. Starts right up. The other is a 2014 Ski-Doo Tundra 2 stroke 550 fan cooled. Was riding yesterday with no issue. Some dumb questions if anyone has an opinion it would be appreciated.

1. While on trailer and covered but outside in the freezing cold, anything I should do to keep them in shape if only used once every 1-2 weeks. Battery/oil/ etc?

2. The 550 2 stroke fan cooled. Takes more time to start. Sometimes gives issues starting at all. At other times like yesterday(in the teens), started after 2-3 attempts and rode well. As above, Battery/oil maintenance now in the Winter?

Do I need to keep them on a charger? Change anything with oil since they are running well? Both have very low miles.

I appreciate any info that can help.

Thanks

Allan

Clutching

I have a 98 700/920 PSI Genesis, what can I do to make that thing rip out of the corners like a raped app and what can I do to make it stand straight up and do cat walks? What kind of Gearing set ups and clutching do you guys have? Does anyone know about these 10al weights, blue and silver spring and r11 helix? I heard that set up is an animal.. what are your thoughts?

communication between sleds

The guy I just got my new RMK was talking to me about some old Collett Communicators he has for his sleds. He was saying it was a great safety feature for riding with his family

Does anyone you know use them? Any thoughts on using helmet communicators when you ride?

Any thoughts would be appreciated......
Thanks
Bob

1982 JD Liquifire 440 need help!

samedi 3 novembre 2018

Clean carbs, new gas, new plugs, it's got spark and will "sputter". After three pulls it's flooded to the point of fuel dripping out the exhaust. I did not rebuild the fuel pump. Carbs are at factory setting.
Any ideas?

It's been quite some time since he's been online here. Hope all is well on his end. Last I remember, he was going to get out of sledding.

Greetings from Mile 0 of the Alaska Highway. A few weeks ago my nephew and I pulled out the old 73 elan from our machinery lineup. Its just about ready to ride again but now I have a problem a 78 elan followed me home today and I'm going back on Sunday to get a Blizzard or Everest with a 503. Looks like it's gonna be a fun winter

Carb switch

Hey guys. So i went and ordered a dg pipe and vforce 3 reeds. I did some research on these phazer builds and guys are putting carb racks off a vmax 500-600. And they are saying you shouldnt have to change the jets on them. Just have to tune them to the motor. What all is involved into putting a set of these on. Is it just the throttle cable that i will have to make work?.

Looking at buying a 97 Yamaha VMax

I am looking at picking up a sled for the first time in a long time. My last one was a 69 Yamaha Enticer 300 that never really had any issues. There is a 97 Yamaha 700 VMax SX locally here that I can pick up for $1000 with 4500 miles on it in near perfect condition. Would I be doing well on this sled? I figure for $1000 I should be able to ride if for a year and sell it next year if I want to pick up something newer. Are there anything specific things I should watch out for on this sled?

The only thing I am worried about on it for me is the suspension as I am a tall and large man. Is there anything inexpensive I can do to the stock rear suspension to get a little more comfort out of it for me?

Hello! I am looking for a simple solution. I put a new fuel pump and lines on the sled. I also replaced the oil pump lines. Started it back up and it idled fine. But the bottom line of the Oiler has nothing in it. The other lines had some oil. I shut it down and checked the plugs they were not white. Ideas?

Front suspension swing arm/trailing arm.

Hello everyone. My 96 Touring E LT 340 has a rusty front suspension trailing arm. The arm that goes from the ski to the footwell. Anyone know what years and models will fit? It looks as though the arm itself didn’t change over the years. But the colors did. I can find plenty of arms if they are interchangeable.
Thanks.

2007 Skidoo Blizzard

Have a problem starting the Blizzard. Getting ready for the season .. filled gas tank 1/4 full with fresh gas..
Made sure kill switch was ok … pressed start button … nothing happened . Checked fuses and all looked ok .. Tried a pull start , nothing happened .. I read if battery dead you can not start this way .. Took battery out and charged to full.. Put battery back in … pressed start button … could hear fuel injection working and it did turn over but would not start .. tried again .. this time it kicked in and sort of ran for 4 sec or so then stopped .. Tried and tried but the same things happened … tried a pull start , the same thing happened .. Took out plugs .. they were a bit wet so it was getting gas … some anyway .. I cleaned and gapped .. put back in and tried to start … the same thing happened . Took plugs back out and replaced with new .. tried to star again .. same things … ran for maybe 4 sec then shut down .. anyone have any ideas on this ..

Polaris fuel tank lines

I recently acquired a few snowmobiles and am new to the sport. In the process of rebuilding much of the engnine bay I found remains of deteriorated fuel lines coming from the fuel tank. There is the vent up top, the main fuel line that connects to the weighted pickup in the tank and then at the very bottom theres a line coming out, could this be a drain or something? What should I do with this line? It's a 1991 polaris trail
