Yamaha Exciter carbs? Pulling my hair out!

samedi 11 février 2017

Hey guys, there is so much great info on this forum I didn't think I would ever have to make an account but I'm just getting my butt kicked too hard this time.

1988 Yamaha exciter 570, was running good then I lost bottom and top end power; would run great at half throttle 40 mph but that's it. Figured it was gunk in the jets so pulled the mikuni round slide carbs.

Found that they weren't too bad. Cleaned all up, reinstalled and wouldnt start unless I put gas in the cylinders. Pulled them again and they were still clean, reinstalled and did not have fire. Noticed that the safety wires on a carb has broken off, pulled that one, looked up the fix and overrode the safety system.

Reinstalled, now I can get it to run but it runs like crap, has a deeper sound to the motor and won't rev up. One cylinder is a little warmer than the other and the plug is more wet than the other cyl. Compression is 130/135 cold. Choke has very little affect on how it runs.

I just keep pulling these carbs, pilot and main jet are clear, pilot air is clean, fuel pickups are clear. I haven't cleaned a lot of carbs in my day but I can't wrap my head around this issue. I have great spark, but it seems like too much fuel/choke condition in one cylinder. Choke has been working fair, I rarely use it besides a blip but they are free and adjusted properly.

I am looking for ideas on what to try. 2 feet of snow coming monday. Ive been working on this sled all week and if i dont get my trail out back packed down before monday ill never make it out to the main trail after 2 more feet. Thanks ahead of time.
