05 rmk 900 no start and back fire

dimanche 30 septembre 2018

Hello I just signed up for this forum! Well here we go I got the notorious 05 rmk 900. I got it and she was dead I pulled the motor got the crank checked and it was fine put a new crank case in it, new reeds, new pistons and jugs, new plugs, cleaned everything I could get my hands on, checked injectors, wire harnesses, and oil pump, everything looked great, I got it all put back together and now it will not start, I have super good spark nice and bright blue but all she wants to do is back fire, I checked my connections and from what I can see everything is correct, I broke the recoil (the plastic wheel inside gave out) so I’m waiting on a new one but this motor is basically brand new, I’m fairly mechanicaly inclined granted I did all the work my self and love working on things, but I’m kinda at a loss here if I pull it it will sometimes back fire and almost rip my arm off and other times it dose nothing at all, any advice would be amazing, thanks

Recoil rope and tube

mercredi 26 septembre 2018

I have a roughly 97/98 mxz 500 (engine is not original, actual snowmobile is 97 mxz 600) and I had to rebuild the recoil, and now I need to get the pulley rope through basically a straw that sits between the chain case and the engine in order to be able to have a fully functional recoil. Anyone have tips on how to get the rope through this tube??? They are almost identical in size and I have tried fishing line, clothes hangers, duct tape etc and no luck. Any help is appreciated!

2015 RS Vector TORS issues

I am receiving a code 84 warning light on my 2015 Yamaha RS Vector. Does anybody have a diagram on where the TORS is on the sled and how to resolve this issue without a costly appt. at the local Yamaha dealership. I ran the sled all of last year without an issue. I relocated my sled in the garage and happen to turn the sled. The warning light appeared when trying to move a few feet. Help

Carbide length?

mardi 25 septembre 2018

Hello guys/gals, how was your summer?

Well, getting some stuff together to do some preseason maint. last year I noticed I lost part of a carbide on my 98 AC. it has a 120" studded track. I don't remember how many, but I think it has 2 per section in a V pattern, 96? I was thinking 6", but then was thinking 4". Its buried in the shed right now so I can`t look at it to see.

Thanks.

2002 Polaris rmk 700 vs 2004 arctic cat sabercat 600

Just looking for opinions, which sled should I buy? 2002 Polaris rmk 700 with 1900 miles, reverse, ice scrapers and a 144” track. Or a 2004 arctic cat sabercat 600 lx with 1500 miles, electric start, reverse, picked track, small rip in seat. My riding style isn’t crazy, I ride the power lines in Maine and don’t do a lot of jumps or anything. Opinions greatly appreciated.

98 zr 600 carb

Hey guys, having an issue that's making me want to pull the rest of my hair out. I have a 98 zr 600 carb, and ive put all new fuel lines, including the in tank line and filter, the inline filter, and all fuel lines. The lines from the fuel pump were replaced last year and the carbs were cleaned before all the new lines were put on. Im not getting any fuel from the pump to the carbs. Its coming out of the pump, but its not reaching the carbs. Anyone have any ideas?

Pull Start to Electric

I have an old 1997 Tundra II LT that we need converting from pull start. We actually have two of those machines. We do not want to spend much money on these, we just want to get them ready for winter. They seem to be a popular machine, so we decided to revive them from storage and only want to spend money on getting them running and making them ultra reliable.

I have not seen much talk about using a drill and whether or not a simple home owners drill would work, or maybe whats required is a mixer drill, concrete drill or if I just have to find a more powerful motor like a starter motor from the car/truck junk yard to modify.

Oh ok I found a video, seems like he is just using a reg drill.

But also, lots of talk of people requiring one or two pulls to start, with parts working perfectly.

Thinking about it, will leave it for now and see how the family gets along with 1 or 2 pull starts, if there is still concern on their part I will look into more closely and fabricate an electrical motor to spin it.

Sled dolly diy

I've decided to build myself a sled dolly so I can move dead sleds around easier. My back is already bad enough. So, does anyone have suggestions on what works, or maybe more important what to avoid or look out for?
I'm planning to use 1" square and make it adjustable width, as well as able to adjust the angle of the handle and remove it for storage. Probably go with the tallest tires I can find, nothing less than 10" for sure

My old Tundra

My brother and I decided that I should take my old 1985 Tundra up to our cabin and leave it there as a backup-plan.

So before taking it up there, I decided to go through it. 100 PSI compression, top end. bore out to .010 over and match the piston. Connectors are all messed up in the wiring, re-do all the wiring, and just go through everything in general

So 2 weeks later, I got it all back together, give it 3 primes and it starts 4th pull. (fuel wasn't fully pumping yet).

Starts and runs, but acts like it is running very rich. Watch it for a bit keeping the throttle pulled to keep it running and I notice fuel is flowing through the primer tubes...a lot. Pinch the primer line and it runs and idles perfectly. Ah ha! Bad primer.

I don't have a spare, but have other old ones. I pull the primers apart and find the bad one uses a rubber diaphragm for the valves. Found another with the same diaphragm in better condition and swap them. Works perfectly! Put it in, the 1985 Tundra lives again!

I do have an issue with the track going off to one side. I loosened the track all the way up and it is still very tight. I'll probably just tighten up the side that it is tracking towards and see if I can straighten it out.

Air Cooled Engine in Summer

This isn't exactly a snowmobile question, but me and some friends bought a 1970's CCW 440 twin two stroke sled motor and are trying to drop in into a lawn mower frame for drag racing, drifting, etc. and I wanted to know if the engine would require cooling fans or if it would be fine without them during summer weather. We're planning on building a hood around it to make it more aerodynamic but I'm worried it would be hard to keep cylinder temps low. We are going to jet the carb for our elevation too. Thanks.

1994 ext 580

mardi 18 septembre 2018

Hello, I've got a 94 ext 580 that loves to start first pull when cold but when warm refuses to start up again and the only signs of life is a sputter everytime you yank the pull cord. Carburetors have been taken off 3 times and are clean, brand new NGK spark plugs, I cleaned out the air box since there was a rats nest in it (it used to sit outside) and it has VERY strong blue spark, looks like a full on taser. Another thing to add is it will not idle.

Trying to use the choke does nothing and as a matter of fact makes it worse (no sputter or signs of life what so ever). I did take apart the choke to clean the little brass pieces so I'm not sure if the cables are out of adjustment? And it smokes a lot too. It seems like it's just running rich. It's early fall here in Wisconsin so I'm not sure if its just too early to be messing with it or what. Thanks

Barn find: Yamaha SL433B

lundi 17 septembre 2018

So new user to the forum here.. never owned nor even ridden a snowmobile but the house we bought recently came with one, lol.

In one of the sheds is this Yamaha, I believe a 1983 model. Anyway seems to have been under a cover for enough years that there was a decent amount of dust on it. The rear ends been propped up on an old propane cylinder. I cannot give the pull cord a go, and neither does the flywheel (or snowmobile flywheel equivalent) turn.
About 2 weeks ago I pulled both plugged and poured a small amount of Marvel Mystery oil into the cylinders.
I really have no use for a SMB so I'm thinking of selling it. Obviously I can get more if teh engine turns over than not so I'm looking for advice.

So I grab a pipe wrench and try coaxing it to turn over or are there any SMB engine hints that might help without resorting to physical brawn with a mechanical advantage?

I really don;t want to tear it up and honestly if I could get it running that'd be a blast but.. I need a few things more.. wood splitter, 4-wheeler, trailer, shed roof, etc.

I'm fairly mechanically inclined.. rebuilt a few small engines, torn down the intake on a car once. So if some work is involved I won't shy away from it.
Thanks

New starter install on a 98 AC cougar

Hi all!
When I bought this sled, the starter had been removed. I like the idea of the electric start, especially for cold starting.
Here is where I am right now, got the starter mounted and have all the wires hooked up. Not sure if I have them hooked up right, especially the small red and brown ones! I tried to turn it over and nothing, I have the clutch removed, does that make any difference? I just want to make sure it is working before I mount everything up.
Speaking of the clutch, I have it removed and was wondering the best way to clean/lubricate? I know some of you recommend acid cleaning, but I do not have any around.
Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks

Loosened head bolts, now what?

So I was rushing and not thinking things through and I loosened the head bolts in my 1992 Yamaha 570. I did not remove the head. But some coolant leaked out, maybe a cup or so. I re-tightened according to specs.

I have not run the engine yet. My question is should I pull the head and put a new gasket on? Is there anything else I should worry about? Or am I okay to just retop the coolant and wait for snow?

Thanks for listening
Dave

Yamaha SRV540 fan bearings

lundi 10 septembre 2018

I am changing my fan bearings on a 86 Yamaha SRV 540. The fan shroud looks so fragile, so before I break something I would like to know the proper way to remove the bearing. At first I wanted to hammer the two bearings out through the fan shroud. But after looking at the parts drawing it looks like there is a circlip and washer between the two bearings. Therefore the bearings have to pulled out? Any ideas on the proper way to do this? Do I just heat up the housing and try and pull it out? Thanks in advance!

94 EXT 580 question

Hello, I'm a total noob when it comes to sleds, I'm just used to working on dirt bikes as I race motocross. Looking to get the ol ext up and going all I really need is a new pull rope and plugs.

My first question is I have some play in my steering. It moves about an inch or two before actually turning the skis. The actual shaft doesn't move side by side but when steering it moves a couple inches before "grabbing". I know there's probably forums on this but couldn't find any for this sled in particular.

Also what the heck is this? It's the plastic cylinder shaped thing. It looks like there should be something in it?
(Image attached)
Again I'm a total noob so please excuse that lol. Thanks.

Bought a couple CL sleds.

dimanche 9 septembre 2018

Hi all, just thought I'd ask over here if there's anything in particular I should look for on these sleds I bought last night. '94 cougar 440 lc, and a 92 EXT 550. Both have spark, but need the carbs cleaned and fresh gas at the bare minimum. Neither runs right now, but I'm kinda handy. Will be going through both and selling the 550 when the snow flys.

Hello to everyone

I need good advice. I have not been involved with snowmobiles since the early 80's, that shows my age now doesnt it. LoL. But now I find myself needing good reliable information for a project. I am looking for guidance in buying a used engine. What engine ( just engine, im not interested in the whole sled ) do you guys feel is the best ? Preferably carbs, no fuel injection as I would like to stay away from as much electronics as possible. Something reliable that can be used hard without alot of breakage but when it does break has a good supply of readily available parts. This is going to be used for a dirt drag quad that will be running a 500 ft track. Can someone give me thier insight ? Thanks in advance for any help.

Hey guys can I get some advice from you? I’m looking at a 95 XLT Special cosmetically it’s in mint shape. It’s on OfferUp right now so I’m waiting to hear back on how many miles it has engine looks clean in the pictures it’s got fox and the Xtra 12. He was asking $650 for it and I’ve got him down to $550. It does run good he sent me a video of him starting it and it idiling. Started in second pull. Do you think it’s worth the $550? I know I’m pretty vague with the details because I dint know the mileage on it and I know they have crank issues, or have been known to have them. With the cosmetic condition I’d guess there’s probably under 3k on it but won’t know until he gets back to me. Let me know wat you guys think. Thanks!

Snowmobile Thin Ice Physics question.

Alright now I know this may seem like a dumb thread to some, but I was looking online and couldn't find much about the matter. Anyways it's basic common sense to avoid areas with Thin ice in general let alone in a vehicle or on an ATV/Sled, But lets say if there is an area of thin ice and you end up driving over it, are your chances of going through the ice decreased if you are going at a speed of 30-50mph compared too 15-25mph? I know you can waterskip if you get your speed up so wouldn't the same work over thin ice where the faster the vehicle is moving, the force of gravity is decreased because the force of driving forward is greater? any opinions would greatly be appreciated, thanks.

So i was timbersleding all last year and fell in love with snow machines, I saw a snowmobile on an auction a 2017 yamaha sidewinder mtx 162 1000 turbo with 400 miles said it ran so i thought it was a steal so i bid on it and ended up wining it for 3k.
it looked like it was just missing just the left side pannel and the top of the track bed had a little dent.
turns out the track was a little off can't tell what exactly is bent to make it look off as it barely off like a finger off on one side. what gets bent in a snowmobile track? ill take pictures tomorrow. i have yet to adjust the track using the adjuster too see if that made it straighter.
what are some thing i need to know about snowmobiling like does a ski like this eat belts?, how to proper maintain ect..

its wrapped already but since ima have to get a new left side pannel not sure what ima doo. thing is like brand new

My Heart Attack!

Absolutely no warning, just some mild chest pain. Now I know why they are called the "Silent Killers". No arm tingling nor numbness like the tv commercials, just a bit of fatigue that I simply associated with my age.

After an exploratory angiowhatever, come to find out the old arteries around the ticker had seen their prime and off to the heart center I was delivered in a somewhat hurried fashion. I now fully understand what is referred to as a triple bypass as I have lived it and somewhat happy to be on this side of the dirt to relay my story.

I had no idea as to the extent of the procedure, but my chest is in almost constant pain from where they ripped that stuff all apart to get to your heart. The missing vein from my leg is still a surprise. Not sure why my leg didnt need it anymore as my other leg has almost the matching one still intact. I guess the heart is happier with this vein, but I have leg numbness around my ankle and scars from there to my private area where that vein was.

Every day is supposed to be better, and I guess it is. But, the struggle to heal has far exceeded any previous surgery or injury I have ever endured. The physical pain is almost as debilitating as the mental anguish, not to mention the lack of income. But, on the bright side, if all goes well, I will be back in the saddle for snow season.

Missed out on the best part of summer. Camping, dirt biking, off roading, shooting, atv'ing, etc.

Small price to pay I guess for things to come, but I am really fighting the entire healing process. On an upswing, I will have a bit more time to spend here seeing I cant do much else.

very basic Maine snowmobiling questions

dimanche 2 septembre 2018

Hi,

I live in GA but have been considering moving to Maine for a couple of years. If so I'd like to be in a area where there are good snowmobile trails, but also within an hour or so of the coast. Are there trails all over the state, including near the coast? Or are they pretty much just in the western and northern parts? And what about snowfall in general? And ski areas?

Also, just in case anyone is familiar with this topic, I'm an operator at a wastewater treatment plant and wonder about possible job opportunities in that field up there. Also about locations of treatment plants. The Google searching I've done so far shows almost all plants are located near the coast and almost none farther west. From my ignorant position that doesn't seem right since they are all over the place here in GA, and I know they are all over the state in NH. If anyone knows anything about that topic in ME I'd like to learn about it also.

Thank you people for any help getting an idea about the situation up there!

89 Yamaha phazer ski help

Hi guys, I am working on an old 1989 Yamaha phazer I bought with my 13 year old son to work on together. We have run into a problem reattaching the skis with a new rubber pad which goes between the ski and the bottom of the shock strut. We cannot compress it enough to get the hole in the ski to line up with the bushing holes. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am a novice so apologize for lack of technical terminology. Thanks!
