Measurements for tools

Any one have a Ryde Fx Shocks Ifp Position/Extract tool? Looking for diameter and thread size that screws into the ifp to make one. Can’t justified spending $90 for a threaded rod with a ruler on it.

Xc 700

One of the guys iWork with said he had a wedge xc 700 twin. Didn't think they made the 700 twin till after the gen 2? But since I don't know everything I'd like to get educated. I'm thinking it was a transplant. When was the 700 twin born? Was it in the xc? He had a white hood. Just curious. I didn't call him a liar. But he can spread it out pretty thick sooo?

Crank no start issue.

dimanche 29 octobre 2017

Ok guys. got a problem. The 97 Ski Doo Touring 380 would not start today. I had it running over the summer, no problem. what it does is cranks but wont start. it has no spark and the headlight is very dim. every once in a while I can get it to start and it runs fine, everything works. then I shut it off and again it wont start.
This issue seems to be hot or cold. I got it started again and got it on the trailer. This sled has had this issue since I bought it. One day it wouldn't start when it was -10. I let it sit till after lunch and then it started and ran fine the rest of the day and the next day. last year it died on the trail on my son. I turned around and it started up so we went to go get lunch. when we came out an hour later it wouldn't start. It looked like it wasn't getting any fuel. So we jumped on the Cat and came back with the trailer and it started right up. I rebuilt the fuel pump at the end of last season, but we never got it back out on the trail.
So here we are now. the previous owner said he replaced the coil/CDI, and it did look newer and wasn't even mounted (I did mount it when I seen it laying on the bellypan).
So I guess my question is does this sound like a Stator going bad? I`de like to test it before I spend $150-$200.

1st snowmobile- recs on older model??

samedi 28 octobre 2017

Moved to a new place with a couple acres and have been looking at different snowmobiles on craigslist and trying to learn about them. Any recaps on solid older models to look for? Looking to spend 1000-1500 and realize I will be messing with it and fixing things. I am Indiana and we don't get a ton of snow so this would just a fun thing for the kids and I to mess around with a couple times a year. Just to give an example of what I am finding. Also, when looking At these, besides starting it, what to test/look at mechanically??

Polaris Indy 340 oil injection

Going to look at a 1998 Indy 340 short track that appears to be in good shape the only thing wrong with it is the oil injection doesn't work so the guy has been mixing the gas for the past 2 years, just wondering what usually goes wrong with the oil injector pump and if it is pricey to fix, the guy is asking 2000$ Canadian for it and it has about 1000 kms on it

Yay!

It’s snowing! Time to get the sleds out!

I’m finding everything but yellow. They are in the shed now and buried so measuring them isn’t easy. Length is t an issue, just looking to find what will fit!

Sxr700 bogs when i come to a stop

So I'm new to the forum but have a Question: I just purchased a 2000 Sxr700 and today I drove it in my field and had a issue. When I take off at full throttle it rips good but when I let off it and come to a stop it bogs to the point where it will not move as if its running on one or two cylinders but after 10 seconds of idle it'll clear right back up as if it never happened? Please Help

Newbie from Central MN

Hello, I'm a newbie to snowmobiles and just got back from picking up a 1995 XLT with 3200 miles on it. Kind of a rush decision but I always wanted a sled and figured this would be a budget way to get started.
Will be posting a lot of what is this, how to do this and so on. Appreciate the community participation I've seen just browsing so far.

Survey for my engineering class

My name is Ben and I am currently a senior at Prairie Ridge High School in Illinois. I am currently taking Engineering Design and Development where I am tasked with finding a problem in the world and creating a solution. It is a year long project and we will present our idea at the end of the year to a group of engineers. Being an active snowmobiler for as long as I can remember I have noticed a problem while riding.. I can't access my phone easily without taking off my gloves and searching through my backpack. This usually leads to my cold hands and snow on my phone. My group, two other high school students, have decided to take on this problem. Before we do that, we need to validate our problem with consumers. All I am asking is for you to fill out this quick survey (should take about 3 minutes to complete). All help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Guys!

03 f7 idles fine but wont move

mardi 24 octobre 2017

Last winter I was riding the sled and it was running fine. The clutch is an aftermarket clutch as far as I'm concerned, as it doesn't crack open until around 4500-5000 rmps. So, I ended up towing a buddy out of a drift and the sled was really put under load. I know they aren't meant to tow, especially in deep snow, but it was necessary. A few days later I got stuck in a drift and tried working out of it but the sled was sort of bogging. I came to realize on the next ride that it would drive and move but it would reach a certain point in speed and stay there. Not a rev limiter, but a constant speed where it wouldn't rev any higher. There was also a weird noise coming from the clutch. I changed the belt and plugs but it didn't fix anything. Now the sled idles fine but will not move. Is the clutch spent? Maybe rollers or springs? I am not a mechanic and have a basic understanding of the sled. I am certain its the top clutch, the secondary, that is causing the issue but maybe not. Any help or what to start looking at would be helpful. Thanks

I have a 98 Arctic Cat ZL 440. Sled ran good last year, till the end. Then the sled just wouldn?t build enough RPMs to engage the clutch. This year I was looking it over and noticed that the carburetor flange was tore, so I replaced it. Now I can?t keep it running. I cleaned both carbs, replaced fuel filter. Don?t know what else to do. Need some help. Any suggestions?

Idle question

I have an 02 ZL 800 with EFI and was just curious what the idle should be at, from what I'm hearing here is 2000-2500, which is making me a little worried as i just bought mine the end of this summer and it sits at about 1200 when idling. Never goes below at the very least and picks up rpms fine and hold the idle for extended periods.... Is my Idle low? and could that mean something is wrong?

'97 XLT won't start ... embarrassed how little I know

mercredi 11 octobre 2017

I thought I had an almost general understanding of engines but I am nearly lost trying to figure much out about this snowmobile. :dunno:

It started about 4 months ago but I've pulled starting rope at least 70 times in the last 3 days and it doesn't start.

I used to smell gas when it did start but I don't smell it when I try to start it now.

I put more gas into the tank because I thought it might be low on fuel. That didn't help.

I am not sure where the carburetor is located. Is there a carburetor for each cylinder? There is something that looks like a carburetor to me but there is 3 of them.

Also, I'm not sure how much fuel should be in the fuel filter cartridge but there is only about 1/3" of gas in it.

What would you suggest I try first? If I had an uneducated guess, there is not fuel getting to wherever it needs to get.

Any idea what I should try?

The only snowmobile mechanic near me closed up his shop a couple of months ago and moved away.

Hey everybody, I am new to the site. I bought a 2002 YAMAHA sx viper last season and am doing my routine maintenance on it. As I road it around the yard I am hearing a noise sounds like it?s coming from the drive shaft. Almost like it?s skipping or a bearing. You can feel it when riding slow and also hear a clinking noise. If I could get some input if anyone else has had this issue that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Yamaha Excel V No spark!

Bought an old Yamaha Excel V, previous owner told it ran last year. The spark is missing, we have checked, that the wire what is going from the CDI to the ignition coil has some low voltage (when engine is turned over) so we have suspected that the fault has to be in the ignition coil. Boughta brand new coil, but there is still no spark at all!

The tether switch has been bridged and that can`t be it, what next? Can it be the ignition switch or something else? Maybe someone has to suggest what should be checked, or is there anything else what can be bridged, to bypass all the switches etc?

Wobbling driven pulley

dimanche 8 octobre 2017

Fired up my '72 Cheetah 440 for the first time since getting it home and my joy was replaced with a what the hell. While setting the track tightness it was up on a jack stand and noticed the primary pulley being off. It wobbled a bit and hoped it was th e sheev. It's not. I shut it down and spun the drive shaft very slow and th e shaft is bent about 1/16 of an inch. The eccentric bearing is fine and actually looks new. I wondering if during its replacement somebody bent the drive shaft.. or is there something I'm missing. How could that shaft get bent without wrecking something else?
Thanks in advance for any info

Parting '03 EDGE RMK 800

jeudi 5 octobre 2017

Hey all, I've got a sled that I bought for the skid, track, and other suspension components that I plan to sell the rest of. It's currently running and drivable. Major pieces up for sale include: engine (planning to sell as long block, but could do the whole thing), exhaust and other engine parts, clutches, body pieces, lights, instruments, etc. I'll post pictures and more details soon (will do a compression check and post results too). Sled has 4700 miles and unknown history. No papers, but I ran the VIN when I got it, and it's clean. Post or PM with any pieces you're interested in.

Short VIN issue

I'm looking for insurance on the Polaris 600 I just picked up. I sent the VIN from ownership to the broker. He said it was a short VIN. The number on the sled is even shorter. Does my 600 Polaris even have a 17 digit VIN?

Polaris 1990 Sprint won't spark.

mardi 3 octobre 2017

I have a 1990 spint, electric start, and I can't get it to spark. I have replaced the CDI box, the alternator looks good, and the switches seem to be okay, checked those too. Any suggestions? It doesn't have the battery in it, if that even matters, I have just been pulling it. I got these free from a friend, and would really like to get them working. Also if I had to, is there a way that I could bypass the switches? I can't figure out why I am not getting a spark.

93 mx470 electrical issues

I just picked up a 93 mx470 with 583 motor. I am new to sleds and i am trying to fix this one up a bit. i cleaned the carbs gaped the plugs fixed the fuel lines and i can get it to start but it has a high idle - I believe this is just an idle screw adjustment issue. The bigger problem is that none of the electronics work, no gauges , no headlight nothing.... the sled came with no battery so i hooked up up to my quad battery but i cant get anything to turn on. My question is where do i start trouble shooting ? it looks like there is a single fuse holder off the + wire going from the battery to the ignition but there is no fuse in place. I temporarily installed an 18 gauge wire to bypass this block just for testing purposes because i didn't have any fuses on hand but i still cant get anything to turn on. All of the plugs look to be connected and i don't see any damage to the harness . I am very competent with wiring as i own a security/av company and i hook up complex electronics quite often , but i am new to sleds so i'm not sure exactly where to start
my trouble shooting. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Polaris 800 Intake & Oiling opinions needed

lundi 2 octobre 2017

Im looking for a couple of opinions on the Intake and Oiling setup that is on an 800 Polaris engine. I really dont know much about it other than a friend bought this buggy that had the engine swap already started. The guy he got it from claims it is a brand new never been fired Polaris race sled engine with 160HP :dunno:. The guy spent piles and piles of money on NOS parts for this buggy, so i can believe that the engine is new.

First off, Does anybody recognize exactly what engine this is? I know its a polaris 800 haha. He had blocked off the oil injection because it will not fit in the frame with that pump hanging off of the end. I noticed that the bottom end had a couple of ports where it looks like oil was supplied directly to the crank bearings? If this thing is run on Pre-Mix is it going to live? Can i just cap those ports off and forget about it? This wouldnt have been my first choice.... but i am just taking over someones project.

Second, take a look at the intake setup that he has. There is about 8-12" of intake tract between the carburetors and the engine. In your opinion, will this work? I would think that it would have a hard time atomizing the fuel properly with that much intake length. This is the main thing i was hoping to get some input on. And hopefully with the picture you can get a sense of what i am talking about. The carbs couldnt be installed normally because the transmission is in the way.

Track repair

dimanche 1 octobre 2017

Just curious if anyone has been able to successfully repair torn or broken lugs on their track. I've tried YouTube, Google, Pinterest, etc. with no definite answer. I did see a video where a guy used loctite to do a repair, but it was basically just to show the strength of the product. I've got a couple lugs that I'm hoping to save and hopefully replace a couple others. Thanks in advance
