BlueBird day!

mardi 29 novembre 2016

Three of us weathered the trails and downed trees and made it to the top of Pelican Butte. It's an awesome view from up there! When the snow gets deep, the bowl to the north of the tower is a climber's paradise! Those with the nerve even ride up and out. Not this kid. Nope. No siree.

Elevation at the tower is 8038 feet, so we were way above the valley fog that socked in the city.

BlueBird day!

New cat, new building!

Our local club finally completed the floor of the Cat Shed to shelter the snow cat. And we have a new toy to play with this year! We had a 2012 Tucker and had a lot of issues with it; now we have a 2016 Pistin Bully 400hp... that thing is going to be sweet to groom trails with!

The building was done through a Recreational Trails Program grant that paid for about 70% of the cost. We still have a ways to go, but at least now we won't have to be scraping snow off the cat every time we go groom!

Here's the cat.. tracks are five feet wide!

We are also housing the OSSA brusher for the winter... it fits!

1993 Indy Classic Temperature Sensor

I am the new owner of a beat up 500 Classic that I intend to get running before the first snow this winter. I am a complete novice to this sport. While I was removing the hose when changing the coolant, I broke what I guess to be a sensor attached to a long cable that was inserted into a fitting just below the pressure relief cap. It goes from the fitting to the temp warning idiot light. Yes, I am the idiot who broke it off. What do I do now? What is that cable called and where can I get a new? one?

Super smokey

When running, especially at idle and low Rpm, I have a lot of smoke coming from the exhaust. Experience in other engine applications leads me to believe the sled is running very rich. The carburetor is a makuni, and the engine is the stock 89 xlv 540 motor. I should add that I am premixing oil and gas, 40:1, as I do not have an oil resoviour or pump.

Would you agree I need to lean out the mixture on the low speed needle (air screw?) or is this excessive smoke being caused by something else. Or, were old sleds just inherently Smokey. Thanks for the input guys!

Graphics for 95 Indy Trl Delx?

I am a brand new snowmobile owner. Not a brand new sled, but just my first sled.

I just recently purchased a mint condition, 1995 Polaris Indy Trail Deluxe with 589 miles on it, with the teal and pink color scheme. Does anyone know of anyone that sells new, more modern graphic kits for this sled? As nice as it is, I want to update it a bit:-)

Thanks in advance guys!

Just bought a Yamaha Phazer II- Help no spark

I bought a Yamaha Phazer II today. This is my first snowmobile and I got it cheap... $100.
I am good with motorcycles but hoping to learn my way around a sled.

I started poking around inside the engine bay under the hood. The carbs are off of it, seems to be getting good compression, I pulled out the spark plug cables and put in new spark plugs and cranked while touching metal (cylinder head) and no spark unfortunately.

I looked at the carb and there are two wires that were attached to each other, black and yellow black I believe. I connected them to the other black and yellow black that were on the harness thinking this was the T.O.R.S. safety mechanism and might be responsible for no spark. Still no spark ...or any lights either. I take it this thing doesn't need a battery? I couldn't find anyplace where there would be one.

I'd like to get it running for some fun when the snow comes. I live in Colorado so it's late coming already.
Thanks for the help.

Ambitious engine swap

dimanche 27 novembre 2016

Hey everyone. New to the forum and I'm really liking it. Anyways, I have a 1980 citation 3500. I have the opportunity to get my hands on a '92 wildcat 700. The wildcat as a sled is pretty well a lost cause but the engine is sound. Anyone heard of doing that big of a swap? Iv heard of some guys doing some big swaps in those old sleds but haven't seen anything that big. I'd love any input on the idea.
Thanks in advance!

Polaris ultra

Just bought a 96 ultra sp that had a blown o ring and had coolant going out thru the exhaust. I replaced everything and it's running great and coolant level is staying the same but it's still smoking and smells like burning coolant. Just wondering if it will burn off what's in there or if I should do something to get it out, thanks.

Help Me Figure Out What I Just Bought

Hey everyone, new to these forums and also sleds. I just picked up a sled to play around with knowing it needs a little here and there but overall starts right up. What I know is it's a 2001 that was a 500 originally and now has an 800 in it. I'm curious to know exactly what the sled is for looking up parts for the track, chassis, etc. Also, maybe any ideas what the motor came out of as I do know it needs a new seal for one of the power valves (forgive me I don't know what Polaris calls them, I come from a world of Seadoo jetskis where we call them RAVE valves)

Next question is the air box was a hack job, they cut the whole front out, clamped two funnels cut in half to the carbs, and stuffed the box full of foam. Was an 800 ever available in this chassis that would allow me to find the correct airbox to bolt up? The previous owner says that the carbs were the same on the 500 and that the fitment issues came from the carb boots having the incorrect angle since they weren't meant for an 800. I find it hard to believe a motor that's 300cc larger would share the same carbs as it's smaller counterpart but like I said, I'm the new one here. Any truth to this?

Any help is appreciated!

Here's a couple pictures:

2007 600RMK...... no gas ;-(

samedi 26 novembre 2016

Howdy,

Just getting my sleds up and running, and this one is being a pain....

So, at the end of the season last year, I ran this sled out of fuel by shutting of the fuel line switch ( Red thing that turns above the fuel pump)

Drained all the ethanol free fuel from the tank, and did the summarization thing

So, today, I put the belt back on, got it off the jack, turn the motor over, new plugs, cleaned up all the bounce sheets and put a little ethanol free fuel in, and tried to start it. Nothing. ( yes, I did have the key on, and the shut off up)

Sprayed a little bit of starting fluid in the plugs, started right up, and died.

Now I am second guessing myself on the fuel. I think the red fuel shut off valve should be straight front to rear, which I assume is open, and side to side is closed?

Also, could it be that the fuel pump is not getting enough fuel since there is hardly any fuel in the tank? Is the pump gravity fed? Should I just dump five gallons in?

Don't remember having this issue last year. Any advice would be appreciated, as I would like to get this one going....

Enjoy and thanks
Bob

Advice for an older rider

I joined the Snowmobile forum as in doing my research related to the purchase of a decent used sled, this forum seemed to have the most current information from a variety of members. My sled for the past few years has been a 1984 Skidoo Formula SS25 which I just sold as I was having great difficulty getting parts, and it was uncomfortable to ride for a 70 year old. i am now looking at two used Polaris sleds. The first is a 2003 Edge X700 121 track, 1.25 lugs with approx. 5000 kms (3200 miles) on it. The top end has been redone by a polaris mechanic. It has mechanicalreverse, hand and thumb warmers and is second owner. Looks to be in real good shape all around. the other sled is a 2004 Edge 600 Vertical Escape 136 track,2 inch lugs with approx 2500 kms. has electric start and mechanical reverse with warmers. I intend to do mostly trail, lake and field riding for deeper snow. Any advice on which sled would best suit and any reliability issues with either the 2003 700 motor or the 2004 600 motor would be appreciated. Also want a sled that is comfortable to ride. Thanks guys,

Advice for an older rider

Electrical problems.

Ok, this is probably a VERY, broad question, but let's see if anyone can steer me in the right direction.

I have a 1986 Yamaha xlv 540. It has a few electrical problems that I am trying to get to the bottom of. Specifically, the headlight does not work (currently has no tail light), the dashboard light does not work, and neither the speedometer or tachometer read. The sled does start and run so I know the spark plugs are getting power.

What I'm looking for is where to begin and how to start eliminating problems. I know a little bit about electrical, but it's not my forte. Unfortunately, every shop in my area refuses to work on anything electrical pre-1990's, so I'm forced to conduct this project solo. Challange accepted.

On a side note, there is a toggle switch with a yellow and black wire mounted the frame, not sure what it does. Switching it on and off has had no obvious affect. The diagrams online shows the switch but doesn't elaborate on its purpose. Go figure.

2001 Polaris XC 800 hits 105mph, dies and comes back

I'm having top end trouble. It's like I hit the kill switch, then it comes back at a lower MPH. It just starts back up on the fly around 40 mph.

It only happens on high speed runs on the lake.

A friend told me to clean my VES valves. I watched a couple YouTube videos and I'm pretty sure my 800 doesn't have them. They should be projections above the exhaust pipes on the front of the engine. (Liberty engines?)

The premium setting on the ignition switch does seem to make a difference.

Do any of you have experience with this please?

Thanks,
Bill

Old 80's Ski Doo MX and 98' Summit running lean?

Hey all, I've got an older Ski Doo MX and a 98' Summit that I recently had seasonal maintenance done on but also readjusted for my lower altitude (wyoming sleds now in NY). Sleds run beautifully but continually throw white smoke. So I'm guessing there running lean? My question is how do I correct this so I'm not throwing smoke? I don't know where to make the adjustments. I know these are two different animals but hopefully someone can help me out. Thanks all.

What sled?

My wife and I and ride dirt bikes, but now we want to start with snowmbiles. We have property in Washington state on the Canadian Border. And now were able to start spending more time up there. Not into Steep hill climbing or racing. We just want to drive unplowed dirt roads. Were able to leave on a snowmobile from our property and ride all day on unplowed dirt roads. Not wanting to buy new, looking for advice on what I need to know for the kind of riding we want to do. I posted a add on Craigslist to trade one of my Dual Sport motorcycles for a snowmobile. Well I've had about six or seven offers. Most were modified hill climbers. One guy has a 2000 Yamaha 700 mountain Max that sounded good but it did no have a reverse. I'm a big guy and I could turn it around without reverse but I want a reverse. Any advice you could give this complete SNOWMOBILE NEWBIE would be great.
Thanks, Mel

Muffler Help - 4 Stroke

Guys - I am going to replace the stock muffler on my XF7000 4 stroke. I have it down between the MBRP trail option and the Bikeman Performance Full velocity muffler. I have watched countless videos on youtube but I am still stuck. Biggest factor is the price. The MBRP is $265-ish and the Bikeman is a steep $400. Does anyone have either one on their 4 stroke that can give me some opinions and why they decided on the one they have? Thanks guys!

How much grease is in a sealed bearing?

About this much. Could be the reason they don't last all that long in the bogies.

New to Snowmobiles Question on Shocks

I just picked up a 1994 AC EXT 580 EFI for cheap.... $100.... runs great first pull start.... Im looking to replace both rear shocks. I assume both are stock one is a 0604-311 and other is 0604-755. Its a sled for my 10 year old to have some fun with. I cant in good consience spend 3-400 on shocks on a $100 machine so its a 2 fold question. Are these shocks rebuildable? How can i tell? Also if i dump <$100 on 2 kimpex or SPI shocks how upset will i be

New to Snowmobiles Question on Shocks

94? AC 580 EXT Carb bogging, weak spark?

I was brought a 94, i think, 580 arctic cat. its the carb model not efi. anyways they couldnt make it run, i believe he said they swapped the coil, but it had no spark when it showed up. first thing i did was bypass all the switches, and it fired up, but it wanted to idle right around where the clutch kicked in, and had one hell of a bog unless you pumped the throttle to get it past the bog. so i tore the carbs apart and they were almost spotless inside. cleaned them out anyways and put them back on. really made no difference. I backed the idle screws out 2 full turns and it is close to where it should idle, and i can plug switches back in and had spark. so someone had screwed the idle way in trying to make it run, and trippped the throttle slide safety switches.

So ive still got this bog. fuel pump has great flow, engine has decent compression(125 - 130). if i pull the choke while its bogging it doesnt change a whole lot, just slowly floods it out worse. if i shut the fuel off while bogging it doesnt really change until it starts to get to the very end of the fuel in the bowl. when i pull the plugs they are wet, not flooded wet, but like it cant burn all the fuel. it will run great once you get it revved up, but thats with no load and the track in the air. falls on its face under load. obviously ive tried 3 different sets of plugs, so im confident i can rule a bad plug out.

am i correct in thinking weak spark can be my problem. visually the spark doesnt look the best just with the plug grounded to the head, but thats far from scientific. the stator reaistance is within spec from the values i found. i feel ive exhausted just about everything and am down to the coil.

what do you guy think? i feel like im on the right track, but it cant hurt to get a second opinion before i go ahead and order a coil.

Looking for guidance

vendredi 18 novembre 2016

Total noob here, never owned a snowmobile, only motorcycles.
Looking to buy something older and cheap just to putt around on ($1500-$2000) and see if I like it.

A few questions -

1) What are some of the questions I should ask when buying used? Whats important?
2) Can I buy some sort of attachment or trailer to put skis on and drive up to a ski hill or is that illegal?
3) Generally how much does all the gear cost?
4) Does anyone know the price to access the trails, +license, registration, etc annually in Quebec?
5) Do I need a special licenses or training course to own/drive a snowmobile in Quebec?

Than you very much for your help and guidance!

Disappearing oil in '06 RS (Nytro)

jeudi 17 novembre 2016

So I know that my oil tank was full last spring when I summerized my sled. Pulled it out of storage, and now the oil tank is nearly empty! The kicker is there is no visible oil in the plastic and not a drop below the sled...

So logically, it has to be somewhere, and the only spot is in the engine? Anyone know if there is a drainback valve of some sort?

Galvanized. This trailer is all bolted, no welding required.
All bolts will be either 1/2" dia or 3/8" dia. See images.

1971 Arctic Cat 634

mercredi 16 novembre 2016

Hello everybody. New member here. I have a '71 panther with the hirth 634 and I'm curious about the value. Everything is in mint condition with the exception of a couple small chips in the hood from being trailered. When I say mint I mean MINT! The old guy I bought it from said he took it on 2 rides the entire time he owned it. Runs fantastic, everything works and is completely unrestored/untouched other than a cleaning. Spent its entire life covered up in a barn. Anybody have a ballpark value if I decided to sell?

Worrying History

lundi 14 novembre 2016

I have a 02 Polaris 550 f/c classic and have been prepping it for snow. When I came into this sled the previous owner was selling it for a steal for one reason or another. $300 with the only thing wrong with it, he claimed it needed a head gasket. He said he was running it last winter and while he was out he thought he saw some oil coming out from the head and he said it didn't want to accelerate. He "limped it home" and there it sat until I pulled it onto my trailer some months later. Since then I have been up and down this sled looking for a symptom of head gasket failure I have found nothing except that it needed a drive shaft bearing job. The bearings have sing been replaced and I thoroughly cleaned the engine compartment and surrounding area. Tonight has been a relatively cold night so I figured I’ll get it warmed and see if I can find a problem and even at ~170F it was running fine, no real issues. The only two things I found is that 1. It has a very low idle (probably ~200 rpm) and 2. Smoke comes out of the connection between the exhaust headers and the muffler. Not a lot of smoke but enough to notice upon closer inspection. I've found some oily residue at that connection and there is very very light oil coming out the end of the exhaust. Enough that after 15 minutes of idle I could feel a residue on the barn floor.

I want to be able to trust this sled going out on the trail, do any of these things set off a red flag or are this relatively common for any snowmobile?

? about tunnel protectors

Hi guys. I have s 98 500 classic and I'm about to stud them. Do I need tunnel protection? I'm using 1" studs. No heat exchangers visible in tunnel but not a lot of room between track and tunnel. Any help would be appreciated. Any pic would be great as we'll as I don't know what they look like for this sled. Thank you.

Try to figure out year of sled

Would I Be Able To Handle/Control This Sled?

samedi 12 novembre 2016

Hey, I am a 16 year old guy looking for a new sled. I currently own a 600cc 2015 Ski-doo renegade sport ACE but after 2 years of owning it, I have completely grown out of it. I am looking at a sled with more power but don't know whether 800cc is too much for me or not.

I weigh 120 pounds, I'm 5'6 tall, have 500km of experience riding snowmobiles and have been riding atvs/4 wheelers for years.

I am looking at the 2016 Arctic Cat XF 8000 High Country Limited. Would I be able to control and handle this sled or do you think it's ahead of my years/experience? Should I go for this sled or get a 2017 XF Cross Country 6000? Which would be better for me and my riding style and experience?

I mostly ride off-trail but I still ride some ditches and trails, 3/5 off trails 1/5 ditches and 1/5 trails would be accurate to my riding. Never in 3+ foot powder.

Other Questions:

How much money would a 250km 2015 Renegade Sport ACE? be worth? (Not my sled, asking for my buddy)

Any other suggestions for sleds? I am open to any sled manufacture as long as it fits my riding style and would be higher-end.

Which sled, regardless of engine/power, would be better for me and what I ride? The XF 2017 Cross Country Limited or the 2016 XF 8000 High Country Limited?

Help with 583 R.A.V.E

Hey guys, I am new to this forum and I need some help, my 583 started this morning, but seems to just flood itself out over and over again, it has spark, and air, also 100 lbs of compression but way to much gas it seems I am not familiar with rotary valve engines and I'm really annoyed at it right now because it has all it needs to run. Maybe a jet problem???

Polaris RXL 650 Triple EFI

Just picked up a Polaris RXL 650 Triple EFI. Sled runs great, and starts first or second pull. I've read about these sleds and how a good battery is crucial with the correct voltage and everything, but my EFI seems to work great. I turn the key and hear the fuel being pumped into the fuel rails. I've also read how there is red beeping codes on the ecu box but that doesn't seem to happen when I start it or cut it off. I've also found the red beeping codes online. My main problem, is the lights. The gauges, headlight, and taillight are all very dim. I've read about this and it seems to be a voltage regulator or a broken or dirty wire connection somewhere. Could someone guide me on the process I should go about to check this? Where the voltage regulator is, and what I should do with it. Thanks.

1999 Bearcat 340 maintenance

vendredi 11 novembre 2016

Howdy all
1st snowmachine for me, 99 Bearcat 340 long track, approximately 1800 miles, all original.

I want to be proactive on taking care of this machine, what do you recommend I do for maintenance to get ready for long trips? Any mods I need to go ahead and perform to circumvent any known issues with engine or chassis? Track looks like a 1" lug, maybe even a 3/4". Do I need to look for a more aggressive track? Do I go ahead and switch over to mixing gas/oil, or leave the oilers intact?

Intended use - flat, groomed trail riding to cabin, river miles about a 3 hr one way trip at 45-50 mph. May occasionally pull a small sled, about 300lbs max. Utility machine only, but anything heavier I'll use a good friend to haul out with his freighting rig.

Thank you in advance! Any advice is appreciated, I am your worst nightmare - a female Texan on a snowmachine :x

Help with a Grizzly 350

I'm trying to do a little research for my buddy. He's got a 2009 Yamaha Grizzly 350, and he says its not revving up and has no acceleration. He said when he starts it and lets it idle it runs just fine, but if he tries to give it any throttle, it acts like it hits the rev limiter. He's done some research himself and found where some people had replaced the CDI box. With the research I've done, I read where possibly brake cables or shifter cables were out of adjustment. I'm going to take a look at it for him and see if I can figure something out. Obviously I'm going to look at the carburetor, plug, etc. first to make sure it's not something simple. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem, or possibly can point me in the direction of what could be wrong. Thanks for your input and help

Track help

Just bought my first sled. 97 Yamaha vmax xtc 500. 2k miles on it, real clean and runs nice. I'm not new to sleding world been riding for a couple years now. Just first time I need to worry about maintaince. But anyways the track is worn down to about 5/8" to 11/16" doesn't really have any nobs left but kinda like flat paddels. So my question is, should I replace track or will I still get pretty good traction?

Been checking out tracks there pretty expensive, but I found the composite talon 32. Any one know if the 1.25" lugs will fit under my sled and if the t32 is a good track?

Any opinions would be great.

Snowmobiles in movies

So I was flipping through the movie channels yesterday and I came across the movie Ski Patrol from 1991. Had some new at the time Ski Doo's. Funny to see what was new back then. I know there are other movies with snowmobiles such as Snowball Express. Anyone know of any others I'm missing?

Thought this would be a good thread till the snow flies!

1997 polaris xlt 600

mercredi 9 novembre 2016

Hi guys I'm in need of some help.
I recently bought a 1997 Polaris xlt 600 with 1900 miles. I cleaned the carbs, idles good but sometimes it likes to creep up in rpms. Even when I give it throttle it will not idle back down. I did replace the one of the pilot jets. It was a .030 I replaced it with a .035 as the specifications say on the hood of the sled. "if its the right hood". All my pilot jets are at .035. The air box is gutted and it has a single exhaust pipe on it. I checked the crank seal and the carb boots with carb cleaner to see if they were bad but had no change in rpms. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

92 Polaris Indy 650 Carb conversion? Need help!

Hey everyone, so I bought a 92 polaris indy rxl 650 for dirt cheap the other day. The sled came with EFI but was converted to carbs. I have one quick question. He got 3 Mikuni carbs and I'm unsure of where some lines go.

On the far left, breather? vaccum? return?
Middle port is breather
and right should be fuel inlet.
Correct?

Also, this has a fuel pump with vaccum from the crankcase. I'm getting some fuel to the carbs, but not enough from what I see. I will mess with the A/F screw soon. I can't find a diagram for this carb so that's why I'm asking. On the other side, it has a breather port as well. I'm getting a lot of fuel on carb #1 (dripping from fuel bowl) but none on the others from what I see. Also, the tank has a return port on it I believe. How should i hook that up? Thank! :dunno:

New to sleds and it wont start

mardi 8 novembre 2016

So i've just got my hands on a '97 Arctic Cat 500 ZL. Bought it off of a friend and he recommended cleaning the carbs. after watching some youtube videos i was able to clean them no problem. After putting them back in I realized that I had messed with the choke and throttle cables via the carbs. Now it won't start at all. It's also worth mentioning that the throttle cable has little to no return and a half inch of free play when the cable is as tight as it can be on the carbs.

97 XLT SP with 60 lbs of compression.

dimanche 6 novembre 2016

Need some help,

I have a 97 XLT SP (model number 0976676) and last year I had trouble starting it up. I bought a compression gauge and checked all 3 cylinders and found that each one was only getting 60 lbs of compression. I bought a new mono block, 3 new SPI cylinders with rings, and a complete set of gaskets and O rings for it. I put it all together and again I was getting 60 lbs of compression. I decided to rebuild the lower half, with replacing all the seals, gaskets, and everything. I bought another new set of rings for each cylinder from parts unlimited. Again, I only have 60 lbs of compression on each cylinder.
Is there anyone who can help me out with my problem? Maybe I have overlooked something, or maybe there is something in the process that I didn't know about doing. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Ron

Have just the motor out of a Cat.

I've not seen the chassis.

The owner believes it is a 2002 Cat, but couldn't tell me what it was. I believe it is a 2002 440 ZR based on the carbs.

When to rebuild a shock?

Picked up a used Firecat rear skid shock this weekend for the Jag. It takes some effort to compress; I have to put it on the ground and push with some force to get it to compress. Once compressed, it stays compressed for about 10 seconds, then comes back up. Rebuild time or is that normal?

Polaris xc 600 smokes a lot!

I just bought a 2001 Polaris indy xc 600 that the seller told me he just rebuilt the top end and carbs. The machine gives off a ton of smoke right now. I just found out it was built in August of 99 so it has to be a 2000.How worried should I be about the smoke? Any comments appreciated.

**Help** 2004 Arctic Cat F7 CARB

Last year I bought 2004 Arctic Cat F7 CARB Model. The sled seemed to run just fine. Just before winter I pulled the carbs off the sled to clean them before the snow flew. After cleaning the carbs the sled also seemed to run fine. Would fire up 1-3 pulls every time. One night we went on a ride for a few hours and the sled acted just fine. The next morning I went to start the sled and it would not fire. After pulling on the sled 20-30 times I got the sled to fire but only seemed to be running on 1 cylinder and my gauges were jus barely lighting up. After about 1-2 minutes of running like shit (and I could not throttle it out) the 2nd cylinder came into play and the sled began to run as expected. All day if I shut the sled down and fired back up when fairly warm it ran fine. If I let it get cold cold it would go back to the same problem, running like shit on one cylinder for a few minutes until the other one fired up. I did a compression test and it was 125 across the board. I changed out the plugs and the problem stayed the same. Sled has new fuel in it and I ran a few tanks though it cause as stated runs fine once warm. I did notice randomly a boggin issue mid throttle. I rode the sled about 4-5 times after being in Michigan we don't get a chance to ride often. I did notice if I sprayed it with starting fluid it would try to fire much easier but still only on 1 cylinder until it runs for a few minutes.

Looking to see if anyone has any advice where to start. I am thinking its a fueling issue or ignition but don't want to just toss parts at it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Stud Length

Both sleds have the standard issue .78" stock track. I may have the option of picking up an old track to use as a track mat on my bridge that crosses a stream on our property. If that track is studded, would a longer stud than a .875" cause issues? I have to image the longer the stud, the more pressure it puts on the track?

Hey everyone just pulling the old 340 out for winter and was seeing if she'd fire up. Fired up second pull sounded great and then boom just started hitting on one cylinder. Touring E lt 2up vibration.

Hello guys. Getting some maint items together for the Doo. Last year I noticed when I revved it up with the track in the air the sled had a vibration. Not terrible, but still noticeable. My Arctic cat is smooth. It's not bad with the sled on a trail, it just feels very rough! I would think it should be smoother. The AC rides very nice, but the Doo just feels like driving a 40 year old car. Is that just the way they are? It's a 97. I'm replacing the spring anchors and the adjusters. I went through he skid last year and replaced a couple wheels and any bearings that were worn or rough. The only thing I didn't check was the drive axle bearing. Would that make it feel like it does? It's like something is out of balance. The motor seems smooth when I rev it with the belt off.

Hopefully that makes sense.
Any ideas?

Grease the drive bearing

okay, silly comment/question time.

While assembling the drive shaft on a couple of machines, I noticed the bearings that get installed are sealed both sides on the PTO side.

So the grease zerk that is usually next to where the speedometer cable goes into basically just greases the end of the drive shaft and the speedometer cable end.

Or are you suppose to remove the outer seal (one on the speedometer cable side)?

The only one that I've ever taken apart that wasn't destroyed still had both seals in-tact, so that is the way I've always put them back together. I've replaced about 5 of those bearings now on 4 different sleds. They seem to be holding up just fine.

The one that I replaced twice was my error. It was the first one I ever did and I put side-tension on the bearing. It lasted about 100 miles. It was an expensive lesson as it took out the chain case, tensioner, and gear when the axle dropped down.

Please help me with steering on Citation 250

mercredi 2 novembre 2016

Okay, so this summer I pulled the motor out of my little Citation 250 to clean up and rebuild the body. While I had it out and had easy access I dropped the skis out by pulling the tie rod ends with the splines that all mesh together, while I had my skis off I painted them up and got my grease zerks on the bushings cleaned out so I can finally start regularly greasing the steering. After all the work to the body and suspension was done I threw the steering back together and dropped the motor in. In the process of putting it away for the rest of the summer I went to turn the skis with the handlebar, turn to the right you have full steering, turn to the left and the tips of the skis move maybe an inch then the handlebar pops over violently and that's all you get out of it. A little frustrated I realized something was lined up properly and decided to deal with it in the fall. So fall is here and I finally got back to the thing, crankcase was filled with gas anyways so I decided it would be a fine time to pull the motor to fix my steering and I can more easily drain the motor out while Im at it. I pulled it out yesterday and started working on the steering put the spline shafts together in a solid thirty different ways and adjusted the tie rods trying to get everything adjusted about a hundred different times. Decided to call it a night and tried again this morning, same thing still cant get it to work properly and Im getting rather frustrated. Basically what I am getting is I can get full steering in both directions but only with the handle bars cranked to the right so far I don't think I can ride it like that, if I get my handle bars straight with the ski tips I get the same full turn to the right but a couple inches to the left and the handle bars pop all at once and the skis don't move anymore. All the fiddling with the tie rod adjustments cant seem to get anything to work right, I am almost to the point of sticking it together with my handle bars tilted to the extreme right but I really don't think that will be enjoyable to ride at all. Two evenings of working on the hing and all Ive gotten done was new carbides on the skis and a lot of frustration with the steering. I have the online manual and it tells you how to adjust the tie rods but says nothing about resetting the steering if you have to remove the skis. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. I can get pictures if needed to picture what is going on here and can also do my best to get a video of what is happening if that would help...

Yamaha Vin on older sled?

Alright, did some looking around, I'm a little confused. Dmv says the vin will be a 17 digit number on right side of the tunnel. Some threads are saying older yamahas only have 9 digit vin. My sled is an XLV 540, 1985 I believe. The number I believe to be the VIN stamped on the right side of my tunnel is 81R-000*** (leaving the last three digits out for security)

My question is, is this actually the vin number, and can anyone confirm the year the sled was made? Thank you.

1991 indy 650 no spark

mardi 1 novembre 2016

Pretty much all in the title. When I bought the sled it needed a recoil (the spring broke), so I got a new one and put it on. Turned the engine over a few times, nothing. I pulled all plugs out one by one and not a single one had spark. The side cover was off the engine for a while, is it possible moisture got into the stater? I've been told to check the kill switch, I haven't done any kind of tests yet, I have all the resistance values for the ignition system, just wondering if this was a common problem on these sleds or not, thank you!
