ovation carb removal

lundi 31 octobre 2016

I have removed and serviced plenty of mikuni carbs over the years so am embarrassed to ask how to remove the carbs from my 2000 Yamaha ovation 340. I can't find a service manual or video online. There are 2 clamps on the air side and 1 on the fire side, but this doesn't seem to free up much. Any pointers?

Hello from N.S

I am active on a couple forums and have one for all my hobbies so figured it was time to find a place to talk sleds, been hanging around here for a while and finally decided to make an account. Only just got my first sled last year right before the winter which was a bit of a bust  Always have had a love for vintage sleds over the new stuff and of course my first purchase had to be something old. Picked up a beat up old Citation 250 and got it going and hoping to pick up something new to work at this fall, looking for and old aluminum 340 body of some sort to throw a 500 in and build something unique.

Greetings from NH

Hi there new member from Northern NH. I have a 89 Indy trail I bought last year and I just picked up a project 87 Indy 400 for my wife ( good mechanically needs cosmetic love). Hoping we have a better winter here than last year trails never even opened ! I'm sure I will have questions as I work on the 400 trying to get it ready for her for Christmas.

95 Indy Rxl 650 EFI Triple issues Please Help

Hello everyone I am hoping someone can help with this sled. Unfortunately this may be a bit of a long story but any of it may be useful.

The last time this sled ran was about 2 years ago the son and I were playing around on the lake and it died from and idle after he stopped. Towed it back to the house and let it sit. The next day I went out and it started ran for about 30 seconds and died. Took it home and parked it for the summer.

I went back out in the fall and the Rope would not move. I assumed the motor was seized. I put some oil down the cylinders and later some Pb blaster. This summer I pulled it into the garage and my son messed with it and got the pull rope to move but it still pulled hard and didn't turn over very fast. I finally got around to it and pulled off the heads and checked out the cylinders. There was nothing in there that led me to believe the motor was locked up at any point. I put the recoil back on and it turned over (without heads) perfectly with no issue. Wiped the cylinders with oil and covered it up. roughly a month later I replaced the head gaskets and torqued everything to specs and in sequence. It was now back to normal. Possible recoil issue? Replaced the plugs drained and cleaned the fuel tank and inspected lines. The in tank pick up line at some point was replaced with a rubber fuel line that had rotted out and was basically little pieces of rubber by this point. Possibly the reason it died on the lake. With all of this fixed. I replaced the battery with new one from polaris and tested out at 12.8V. Still would not start. Fuel pump was not cycling. Tested bad and replaced.

Still no start it will fire on first 4 or 5 pulls and thats about it. Randomly after that. At times I will put fuel down cylinders and sometimes it will fire and sometimes it will not.
Wont even run for 2 seconds. It seems to be acting as thou the EFI doesn't have enough power even thou the battery checks out and connections seem to be good. The spark plugs have nice blue spark.

I did pull the fuel rail out w/injectors held them in place and the seemed to be spraying fine when pulled. Fuel is returning to tank when rail is pressurized toward the end of the fuel pumps cycle.

I pulled the drain plugs on the crank case for each cylinder and at first some nasty reddish brown fluid came out of all 3. Didn't smell like fuel. Maybe the Pb blaster and oil.
I seem to have gotten it all out now. I have pulled the Crankcase drain plugs since after about 30-50 pulls and the middle and left cylinders have fuel that drains out doesn't seem like much maybe a half a bottle cap full from each and the right cylinder is close to dry.

Checked out all ports I could while heads were off and all were clear.
Also the exhaust had a bunch of leaves and crap in it that was cleaned out.
I will be doing a compression test on Tuesday this week. Sled has no upgrades.

Thank you for taking the time to read this! :)

XLT crankcase filling with gas

dimanche 30 octobre 2016

I have a 1997 Polaris XLT Limited and the case fills with gas overnight. I have replaced needle and seats and o ring. I also replaced fuel pump diaphragm and gaskets thinking it was coming from pulse line. When I first picked up the sled it had been sitting outside for two years and had water in the tank (that I didn't know about at the time) which caused a bog that I couldn't fix so I had to bring it to a shop where the tank was drained and carbs got tuned up. Since there was water in the tank I assumed the fuel pump diaphragm cracked from water in the gas freezing and expanding. It does look like the gas is coming from carbs into the cylinders but I just can't understand why since the needles and seats were replaced. The N and S cut off the fuel when I pour it in on the bench but once there in the sled they leak. Sled is level.

Does anyone have an answer for this?
Thanks, Erik

4Tec oil issue

Hi guys, I purchased a 2012 BRP with a 1200 4Tec. What's your thoughts on this thing running with no oil for approx 3-5min? Plus, who knows how long the bonehead I bought it from 3 months ago ran it. Never thought to check the oil until now and it's bone dry....assuming he dumped the oil and forgot to add. The sled is absolutely mint so I figured I could trust the guy....is there not a warning indicator on these things? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!

No oil 4tec

Hi guys. I just purchased a 2012 Renegade X with the 1200 4Tec. I checked the whole sled over except the oil level when I purchased it from a guy I trusted...the sled is absolutely mint except he must of forgot to add oil once he drained it because it's bone dry!! I know this is a loaded question but how much damage have I done by running it for approx 3-5 min (loading/unloading off trailer)...who knows how long he did as he wont reply to me. Is there not a "low oil" warning indicator on these things? Any thoughts or input is greatly appreciated!!

Nytro MTX prairie and mountain tuning

vendredi 28 octobre 2016

I picked up a 2010 Nytro MTX 162 that is stock. I ride in the prairies around 2000' and in the mountains at 6000'. I am trying to set the clutching for these two areas so that I do not have to change rivets and gearing every time I go out there. Would that be possible? If I was a little high on the RPM's here and a little low out there? Or is that just a bad idea and I should have two different setups? Current gearing my guess is 18/40 because that is what the part list says. Would consider 20/40. Also any idea on rivets that I would need to make the MTX work in the prairies with that gearing? My guess is 3.6 gram rivets in all 3. Stock I believe if tuned for 10,000 feet with no rivets. Correct me if I'm wrong on this.

A way to static test voltage regulator?

jeudi 27 octobre 2016

I bought an 88 Phazer with electric start, but the guy didn't use the electric start and had no battery installed.
I pulled the starter and I ordered the parts to fix it.
In the service manual, it said not to run the engine without a battery because the voltage regulator will be damaged.

Is there a way to static test the voltage regulator to see if it is still good? I will have the parts perhaps next week to get the starter in and a battery, but I wondered if I can test it now so that I can order a regulator if it is needed.

I thought of connecting it to battery with an amp meter installed to see if it is charging, but I have a lot apart right now (carbs, engine mounts, muffler, etc.), waiting for parts, and I want to wait for the parts before running it, if possible.

Any ideas?

Just bought a fixer-up sled. Need some advice!

mercredi 26 octobre 2016

Hello everyone,
I picked up a 1991 polaris indy 650 rxl for dirt cheap the other night. Just for a fun winter project.
It has been converted to a carb setup instead of the EFI.

Here's some quick questions I have.
- The carbs were in a box (have been hot water treated and cleaned). There are 3 of them obviously. Now, from the tank, I have to split up 3 different lines running to each, correct?

- The EFI harness/wires are still there. But disconnected, I can snip those away, correct?

- Everything is mechanical now from my point of view. There is no fuel pump, correct?

The sled has not been ran in a few years. I drained out all coolant and oil and replaced every single line and will fill it with fresh fluid. It has good compression, just unsure about the questions I had above. Keep in mind, I am 19yr old and have minimal experience with snowmobiles. More familiar with ATV's & dirtbikes. I pick up side-projects to learn here and there to learn some more stuff.

Thanks for your input! I look forward to see what you guys say! :nerd:

Just got a new (to me) 1996 Ski-Doo Touring LE. I am picking it up later in the week. I plan to change fluids, etc but was wondering what else I should look at.

Riding should be fun. I can cross the road and then ride on about 25 miles of Forest Service roads :cheeky4: My wife and granddaughter are looking forward to it

New guy to snowmobiling

Hello everyone,

I just got a 1996 Ski-Doo 440 Touring LE.I have not picked it up yet but the only thing it is supposed to need is a fuel pump and fuel cap. Traditionally, I replace all fluids, filters and belts when I get something new to me. What else should I plan on doing or should I be checking?

This is my first ( and at 69 probably last :)) snowmobile. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

AC 600 triple to 800 or TCat

So I recently rebuilt my 97 Powder Extreme and I love it. However I was thinking of buying a tcat with some body damage and doing a engine swap. So I would have a 1000cc Powder Extreme (not many of those!)
I know I would need the jack shaft, carbs, engine mounts, and exhaust. But is there anything else that you guys see that would prevent it from happening?

Riser on a 00 RMK

vendredi 21 octobre 2016

I have been riding my 00 RMK 700 with the stock steering height since I bought it 2 seasons ago. Now I want to put a riser on because I find I'm always hunched over and its especially difficult when trying to sidehill etc. I have a few questions. One question is what height is ideal. Right now when standing the handlebars are about at crotch height. Would 3 inch be sufficient? I also don't really want to have to extend any brake lines / cables etc. if I don't have to. Ive heard that at 3 inch I wouldn't have to extend anything. I'm not sure if this is true. I'll have to look further into it. One final thing that has stopped me from putting a riser on before is my snowmobile cover. Parking inside isn't an option for me so I need my cover. Anybody have any luck with fitted Polaris covers and risers. I Don't really want to spend money on another cover or modify my cover. Any input is appreciated.

ski guides

jeudi 20 octobre 2016

picked up a new trailer and a set of ski guides to protect the trailer and ramps. After checking, the slots in the guides are about 1" deep, but the carbides are over 1 1/2 inches below the ski bottom. Are the guides tough enough to not get ripped by the carbides or will they be junk by mid January. Didn't have this problem with my 87 Enticer or 72 Evinrude.

07 Ski Doo Blizzard 800HO no spark

Need help, last spring I started it to move it. I trailered it to my underground parking garage. I unloaded it without starting and it stayed there all summer until a few weeks ago. I had bent the bars and replaced it. I kept all the same controls on the left ( start, lights etc.) I kept the throttle and kill switch but replaced the grip heater spliced 2 wires and heat shrunk. I put everything back together and tried to start it this morning. no beep from the dess key? made sure the kill switch was off still nothing. looked for unplugged wires all OK. I tried jumping out the starter and after a minute it fired for a few seconds but as soon as I remover from relay it quit ( normal) I tried everything. I took the whole console off again and looked for something I didn't hook up. Any suggestions? again everything worked fine all last winter including loading it on trailer. I have the odometer and tach unplugged while I try to figure this out, do these have to be hooked up to start? Can I bypass the Dess for good? thanks in advance.

1991 skidoo Mach 1 617

I have a few questions about my 91 Mach 1.

1. My clutch is acting up and I can't afford a new one so will a clutch from a 583 work or what other engines have the same clutch on it that would work?

2. Where is a good place to find parts for my sled? I have looked and can't seem to find many parts for it anywhere.

3. Someone before me has worked on this sled and it seems to be running rich. What can I do to fix this? I am using it for trail riding.

4. What other sleds have the same style exhaust and can?

Any info would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Mike

mercredi 19 octobre 2016

Took almost two hours to try and log back in? What The Fuck? Take a few months off to deal with personal issues not to mention the off season. Apparently I missed out on something? Between security crap, not seeing the difference between a O and an 0, along with a bunch of other crap and then failing 3 out of 5 attempts at my new log in, maybe someone at the top is wondering why someone would even try to get back on here, I know I am.

Being a self proclaimed putertard and clearly airing my inabilities to be computer proficient many times on this site, its hard for folks like myself who dont really git a shit about techno crap to whole heartedly jump through ridiculous hoops just to check in and read a few things. Hopefully the computer saves this log in or I may not make the effort again. Wow!, just Wow. And I always thought my user name had a capitol "Y".

1996 Ski Doo Formula plus won't stay running

So I recently bought a 1996 snowmobile, this is my first snowmobile. When I was there I had my buddy (who's a die hard snowmobiler) go though it, he check the compression which was 120 psi in both cylinders. But before I bought it we cranked it up and it wasn't idling very well it would bog, everyone there blamed it on the heat (it was the middle in southern Wisconsin). Fast forward i'm tinkering with it pull both the carbs clean them, turn the screw on the left side of the carb which I assume is the air fuel all the way in then back it out one. After this it sounds good and idles for maybe a minute then dies, and once it dies its really hard to get going (10+) pulls.

Note: Basically every RPM below 2000 it would have no power a bog. And even when running at full throttle it will eventually just give up and bog to death.

New Guy got a ?

Hi snowmobilers. I'm a airboater, "southern fellow"
I've put a 1996 Yamaha VMAX XT 600 engine on my air boat hull.

I did not disconnect the wires so I don't know where they go.
Only 4 wires that I need to know. Two from the CDI orange and black next to each other. And 2 on the rectifier red and blue.
The black wire from the CDI is connectec to white with red stripe that goes into the engine behing the recoil starter. This wire also goes to the stator.
The blue wire from the rectifier goes to the stator also.
If I don't get these wires right it will ruin the stator cdi and rectifier.

Starter motor 88 Phazer

I just bought an 88 Phazer and the starter motor won't turn over, not even by direct connection by jumper battery.

I would like to remove the starter, but it looks like it is in front and under the engine, so to speak.

My question is this: I think I can get the mounting bolts out, but it looks impossible to remove the starter without removing the engine, or at least taking the engine loose and tilting it back. Has anyone else removed the starter? Does the engine have to come out?

Thanks!

89 yamaha phazer

I have just joined this forum and had a puzzling question.

My sled is an 89 yamaha phazer. Great sled. I have a problem with it not firing up. I got it all cleaned up this year after it not running last year.
I started it up and it ran okay for a few minutes then it died out. Tried to start it again and it didnt even fire. I checked psi in both cylinders and i have about 105 psi in both. Plugs are wet. Weird part is that when i take off the left side plug wire there is still no fire. But when i use an old plug just to test spark on the ground it fires and barely idles on the right cylinder. Put the wire back, nothing again. Did this a few times with the same result.
I swapped out cdi boxes and coils and same result still.
Tested the ohms on the stator and its still in the green.
I think there is a timing issue because before this issue the left cylinder wouldnt fire right on idle. I could take off the wire and it would idle the same if the wire was on. But no idle if i pulled the right side wire.
But i want to ask you guys too see what you think before i tear things apart.

96 xcr 600 sp. in some info what I have found in primary and secondary

Hi , new go Polaris sleds . Herd the 96 xcr sp was junk in less changes where made . Got the primary cleaned up and. Condition was good . Wondering what engagement would be with this set up in there , yellow spring 3 1/2 long with blue or purple lines on it , 10- 54 weights , secondary is not stock it has a dark green metal flake helix with purple spring . The person I am setting this up for is about 220 and 5"10 tall . He's been riding my mxz 600, and he's into the low end and midrange, have been trying to find a down load on this year but no luck. I widen the front end by turn the spindles around , have parts from a 99.. there a reason why people don't respond , I have been a member on her for about two years . I no i can't change my profile here . Some thing is screwed up in the settings and pass words . I read all these great mods and info given out. Is there a option I have to turn on to get people to answer back. I wrote the form board about this issue . And waiting for them to respond.

Which carb is which? MX 470

vendredi 14 octobre 2016

I have a 1986 Ski Doo Mx 470, I was looking in the shop manual to see how to tune the carbs and it said the carbs are different and they have to be on the right sides for the sled to run right. I just took the carbs off to clean them and didn't pay attention to which went on which side, so my question are; is there a difference between them and how do I tell them apart?

2 up seat suspension

Welding up a nice lightweight 2 up seat for the back of my sled so my girl can come along. i have a '02 polaris 550 classic and i was wondering if i should be worried about bottoming out because of the extra weight. i'm thinking about going to .405 x 77 springs from the original .375 x 77. will that be enough to take care of any problems? or do i need to look into something stiffer? if they if make something stiffer. i'm about 6'4" 250 and she is 5'8" and somewhere between 120 lbs and 150 lbs. i'd give you a closer approximation but i'm not asking her hah. together with stuff probably looking at almost 400 lbs. im not looking for race quality suspension i just don't want it on the ground 24/7.

2002 Yamaha viper motor siezed

Hey guys I have a 2002 Yamaha viper and a couple years ago the motor siezed when I was driving it. I always took care of them with servicing and what not. One night I took it out for halfway around my neighborhood and it just shut off and then I tried to pull start it and the pull string would not pull. Talked to a couple people and they say the engine is siezed but that's the furthest I got so it has been sitting for a couple years but now I finally have the time to get to it. I was wondering on what I should do and where I should start.
Would it be cheaper to rebuild the motor or just put a new motor in?

If any one could get back to me that would be great thank you.

Rusty rivets on ZR6000

I have a 2014 ZR6000 that I absolutely love, expect for one thing. The rivets that hold the coolant HX to the bottom of the tunnel are rusting. The rivets come up through the tunnel and are exposed behind the seat. The rusting rivets are causing the paint on the tunnel to bubble. Looks like crap on a sled that is only a few years old. Anyone else having this issue? If so, what did you replace the rivets with?

New to Forum/New Sled

Hey guys...I just found this forum today and there seems to be a ton of great info on here. Great find.

I just got a new sled this past weekend as well. Picked up a left over 2015 Arctic Cat XF 7000 SnoPro Limited. Got $4,500 off from sticker so I couldn't pass it up. Now I just gotta sell my 2016 Ski Doo MXZ 600 I bought last year! I started with mods already when I got home as well. Put the LEd hand guards on. I have more things on the way as well. I attached some pictures as well.

what size truck box for 174" track?

mardi 11 octobre 2016

Hi, Ive had a 151" 07 skidoo for 7 yrs and have used a trailer and a home made sled deck to good success. I have just bought a 174" 2016 XM and feel that my toyota tacoma with a 6'1" box probably isnt up to the task of carrying both sleds. SO i am looking to upgrade my truck and possibly buy a sled deck to carry the 174" and the old sled as well. I am looking at a truck with a greater carrying capacity, but do i need to get an 8' box or are there sled decks out there that will carry the 174" on a 6' or 6'6" box?

So what should I buy?

I know, I know.... its like asking a question like, what should I buy and Chev or a Ford? Well I'm hoping that I will get at least a bit of feedback based on the following criteria.

• We will not be doing extreme sledding. Just riding trails with my wife and doubling my son (12). I am in my early 50's.
• Will be buying new and will be trading in for a new sled every few years as warranties expire
• Will be buying 2 sleds so the cost must be under $10K CDN each
• We can ride right from our front door but will be getting a trailer as well
• Prefer to have reverse
• Will need some sort of back rest for longer rides

I don't know.... not sure what other information to provide. I guess I should say that I used to ride a fair bit when I was in my teens but that was a long time ago and I didn't own the sled(s) i was riding.

Many thanks,
BH

So what should I buy?

...yet another newbie!

Hey all,

Just joined and look forward to participating in the community. As a kid/teen I used to ride a bit but in the last 30 years or so, not so much. I'm looking to get back into it with my wife and son. Looking forward to a great winter season!

2012 procross 800 Kill Switch Malfunction

Hi everyone, just wondering if anyone has encountered this? I just recently started my sled this last weekend and the kill switch was pretty much dead. I have to use the key to turn it off. I do have a tether which I didn't check on. I remember that they are pretty much wired together and work off of each other. could this be a possibility? I will be attempting to fix this weekend, any information would be greatly appreciated

Seized Drive bearing

lundi 10 octobre 2016

So this happened on a friends '95 Summit 583. The bearing on the speedometer cable side seized up and did this damage. Bad, but not so bad to be difficult to repair.

The structure is still there for the bolts. The bolts are actually part of a ring, so I'll replace that ring I think other than that my only concern is blocking snow from getting into the bearing area and inside the tub (just below the clutches).

I have some other aluminum that is pretty close to the same thickness if I double it up. I'm thinking I'll cut a patch to fill the hole and then just attach it to a strip on the inside for a little bit of strength. It won't need to be really strong as the bolt-ring and structure would still take all the pull/weight/torsion.

First picture is from under the tunnel. You can see the bolt-ring was cut through. Second picture shows that the bolts are still supported pretty well.

Hardest part about this sled is the clean up. It sat for 5 years partially torn apart, evidently they couldn't figure out how to get the brake caliper off to pull the chain case off.
Lots of rusty parts and even the aluminum needs to be cleaned up.

I'm debating on whether or not to pull the motor apart. It seems to turn over fine and have good compression. Just 1478 original miles on it.

He also has a 95 Summit 470 that ran before they parked it, but it is seized up tight right now. I'll work on it after the 583.

What is interesting about both these Summits is the paddles are fairly small. From the band to the tip, they are probably 3/4" at best. My 94 Summit 583 they are about 1.25" - 1.5" tall.

Aluminum flecks in exhaust header

jeudi 6 octobre 2016

I have an 02 polaris classic 550 f/c that i recently aquired. i've been running through the works to make sure it's ready when the snow hits but i was cleaning cylinder heads and i noticed some oily residue in the exhaust header along with some metal shavings. i was able to fish a couple out on a wooden dowel and when i passed it under a magnet, it didn't stick so im assuming its aluminum. there isnt alot but im wondering if it's cause for concern. the cylinder walls are almost perfect except for the clutch side cylinder has a faint wear line on the exhaust side but not enough to cause the metal flecks. also the previous owner commented that he thought it needed a head gasket but i couldn't find any evidence of that. i'm waiting on a compression tester in the mail. currently starts fine and runs well. fires on both cylinders starts on first pull. so do i need to looking into cylinders/block problems?

SRV won't move

mercredi 5 octobre 2016

I have a 85 SRV and it just won't go over 4500 rpms, which isn't enough to make it move. I just replaced the clutch with a rebuilt one I bought. When I put it on and tigthen ed the clutch bolt, it just turned over the engine towards the very end of the bolt. I tried adjusting and cleaning the carbs but that did nothing. It idles okay but the choke and idle screw do nothing either. Starts within a few pulls everytime though. What is the problem!

IQ seat swap to an evolved chassis

mardi 4 octobre 2016

I got a 95 Indy 500 handed to me and I want give it some modern look with a few modifications one being drop brackets and a seat swap. My question is what will have to happen to put an IQ seat on this evolved chassis. What modification to the shroud and so on. I'll post a picture I found on google but it just has seat put on stock tank which I'm not a fan hence the post.

Protecting the oil line

dimanche 2 octobre 2016

On the Jag, the line from the oil tank comes really close to the fuel pump. I run a larger diameter fuel line from the fuel pump outlet to the carb and secure with clamps. I do this since I'm pulling the carb every so often and removing the line.

I'm looking for a way to protect the oil line from rubbing on the clamp. I'm thinking of getting some larger diameter automotive line, cutting it in half and securing it to the oil line with some zip ties.

Any other thoughts?
