When to Freshen Top End on Polaris

vendredi 30 septembre 2016

I've got about 4000 miles on my RMK 600. Compression is still right at 130 on both cylinders, and it runs like new. I know B. C. Dan blew his 700 a few years ago, and I'd prefer to freshen the top end to prevent that if others have had problems. I haven't heard any problems with the 600's, just wondering. AC's I've had seemed to need freshened at 3,000.

How many miles approximately should I get out of 1 tank of oil?

jeudi 29 septembre 2016

I was wondering about how many miles I should get out of 1 tank of oil? I have a 1999 ski Doo mach z 800. I am new to snowmobiles so I am just curious. Also how many quarts does my oil tank hold on my sled? I just ordered 1 gallon of ski Doo XPS full synthetic oil and I'm wondering how long it should last. Thank you

Possible overheat with 4 stroke

mercredi 28 septembre 2016

So I just picked up an Arctic Cat 2002 4 stroke Touring. It started up great when I was looking at it, but we couldn't find the spark plugs to save my life (was beginning to wonder if it was a 4 stroke diesel). The oil & the crankcase oil both were clear and new looking. The owner said he had it professionally summerized 2 years ago. Beyond the missing spark plugs, the only thing wrong with the engine I could see was that the plastic belt guard had melted off its mounting bolts.

Once I got it home, I discovered the integrated coil - spark plug business and the plugs were quite oily and blackened. The compression was great - about double or more what I was seeing on my two strokes & consistent between all three cylinders. Then I noticed there was no antifreeze in the overflow tank, or any visible when I opened the coolant cap. It was wet though, so there had to be some AF in there.

So my theory is that either there is an AF leak, or when it was Summer-ized, they drained the coolant and forgot to refill it. Then in the intervening years the owner or his kids ran it for awhile where it got hot enough to melt the belt guard and when it stank of burning plastic, they (hopefully) shut it down and put it back on the trailer.

Anyway, I'm not sure what to make of the fouled plugs - could be fogging oil, or some sort of oil injection business when you first turn the key and have to wait while some electrical motor or pump does something (like waiting for glow plugs. :) ). Not at all sure what that wait is about.

Most importantly, I'm wondering what else I should look for? For sure I'm going to make sure there isn't a coolant leak. The oily plugs will take care of themselves perhaps once it runs for awhile. Is this something I really need to bring to a dealer/mechanic to verify it's all ok?

I appreciate any/all advice you can send my way. I'm reasonably mechanical - more so with 4 strokes than 2 strokes - but there is a limit what I can do without a decent shop/tools/patience. :dunno:

Hello everyone from the Great State of Wyoming. New to the forum but having been riding for years and then quite and about 5 years ago started up again. Bought a couple of old machines just to get in and out of our cabin. They worked good for that but we decided to upgrade some so we could enjoy riding on and off the trail. Just bought two (new to us) 2007 Rages with 600 miles on them. Think they will work good for what we want. We mostly ride in the Black Hills of Wyoming and SD, so if you ever get this way let me know and maybe we can take a spin together or if you need any information about riding the Hills or the Big Horns let me know.

Just got very first sled.

Just got my first snowmobile. I have a few questions because I know very little about these things. 1st it's a yahmaha exciter 570 and I'm not sure exactly what year it is. It has 61xx miles and not sure but I hear that's alot. I got it for little next to nothing and to me at least seems to be in pretty ok condition. Also the carbs appear to be missing a couple houses cuz there are two ports on top of each carb that aren't connected to anything. I will post pictures of that and the whole thing. Other than that if I can get it running will it be a decent sled? I appreciate any and all input feel free to add other information also. Thank you.

90 Polaris 400 - no spark

mardi 27 septembre 2016

I replaced my 400 single seat with a dual seat/backrest. Local repair guy said the brake light sending unit was failing, and that he had a unit I could use, but required me to actually cut the wires and then add female connectors so they'd mate to the male connectors on the replacement unit.

The brake light worked for a while, but at the end of this '16 season I noticed it wouldn't start up anymore. I let it sit a few months, then pulled one of the plugs with the wire attached and definitely saw no spark. I even held the spark plug to the cylinder head to see if that would change anything, but didn't.

Any recommendations on root cause? Would it be the CDI ignition assembly, the stator, the regulator, other? Could my rigging of that brake light switch have caused one of the electrical units to fail?

My manual 15335026-Polaris_Download_1985_1995_Snowmobile_Service_Manu al_Repair.pdf gave me the following:

- Spark plug(s) fouled (can't be; new plugs/checked clean)
- Secondary coil bad or wires disconnected (not sure on this one)
- Primary coil shorted or open (how to check?)
- Ignition points pitted or dirty (how to check?)
- Ignition switch shorted (how to check?)
- Auxiliary switch (how to check?)

I do have a current tester with the pointed end, light and clamp. I also have an Actron CP7672 AC & DC voltmeter with the red/black leads.

All the lights, displays, and even hand warmers worked fine.

Attached is a schematic screen shot.

Thanks, Eric in Slinger, WI.

polaris fuel leak (1997 touring classic

Hello,
Picked up a 1997 Polaris Touring Classic 500 with 135 miles. Spent it's life in the garage of an older gentleman. Mostly good shape but only runs for a few minutes and not well. I suspect I need to be rebuilding and cleaning the carbs but something else is also happening. Fuel is leaking into the sled and it seems to be coming from an odd location. Seems to be at the base of the pull starter assembly. I see where there is a tube that leads from the fuel delivery manifold (is this a pump also) down to the lower part of the engine. The other tubes of course lead to the two carbs. I'm guessing it might be this tube that is feeding fuel to the lower part of the engine that might be the source of the leak. Obviously a novice here but can't figure out how else fuel would be getting to the area where it is leaking from. It's not tracking down from any other spot that I can see. Wondering if this is enough info to trigger a few thoughts on what or where my leaking problem could be... or at least what the hose would be feeding (or not) at the lower part of the engine.
Thanks in advance for any tips.

Looking to buy a 2014 RS Venture TF

dimanche 25 septembre 2016

Hi all, I'm new to the forum. I've been out of sledding for 14 years. I always had Ski Doos. The wife and I are looking at buying a 2014 RS Venture TF with 733 miles on it. It looks to be in good shape. Is there anything I should know about this model before pulling the trigger? Thanks very much.

Swedish Watercross 2016

mardi 20 septembre 2016

I suddenly realised I haven't posted any watercross pics here from this year yet! The season is now over unfortunately, I only got to visit 2 events but that is 2 better than none! The first one was the Swedish national championships and was held in basically perfect weather conditions, the second was a local event held in almost gale force winds ... many competitors dropped out of that one and they had to redo the course (if nothing else, the ramp came loose from its moorings and floated away ...) but it was still cool to see the brave few battling the waves.

Can someone help me please?

Hello I noticed on my sled that when I turn my handle bars left the skis turn all the way and stop and the bars stop turning when the skis do. When I turn the bars to the right my skis turn and stop where they should stop but my handlebars keep turning a few more inches after my skis stop turning. How can I fix this? I'm sure this isn't normal. Thanks in advance for your help.

Stiff brake lever

lundi 19 septembre 2016

I have a 2002 polaris 550 f/c
i have been doing some repairs on various elements of it and one part of such was a bearing replacment and a new drive shaft. i had to take the brake caliper off to get at the chain case and so on. when i reassembled the brake and the lever went from perfectly fine to stiff as can be. i get full braking power but the lever only moves 1/4th of an inch if that. i was going to bleed and replace and see how it is after but i was wondering could it mean the master is busted? with the bleed valve open the handle works fine. i have full range of motion on the puck and the brakes have 3/8th of an inch of life in them. the brake fluid appeared to be murky but before any work was done the brake seemed to do fine. whats the deal?

Pull Start

dimanche 18 septembre 2016

I have a 1996 Polaris Storm 800, when I try and started it last winter, the chord has no tension and wouldn't turn over the engine. It got more and more common that it now 90% of the time does not have tension but will always pull back in and might have tension every few times. What is wrong and what can I do to fix it?

2003 cat pantera project help

So I picked up a 03 cat 550 pantera I plan on modding into a ice fishing/trapping sled. Now my question is about the can, the factory one is huge! Plus mine is in fairly rough shape so I was curious about an aftermarket can. No one specifically makes one for that machine but since the 550 motor is in other machines such as the zl would those work? Any help would be great thank you

95 polaris XLT Indy 600 extr-12 Clutch

New guy here, so with that in mind, I have a question. just bought a used 95 Polaris XLT Indy 600 with 4171 miles on it. my question is how to adjust the primary clutch. it will engage the belt at around 6k rpm. I think that's a little bit high but ive only rented sleds prior to buying this one. it has the blue spring on it which I need to change over to the gold one since im not over 6000 above sea level. ive looked all over the web trying to find info or a video on how to do the adjustment but haven't found for yet.

any help is much appreciated.

What's your thoughts.

I was looking at a sled someone has for sale. It's a 1998 ski Doo summit 670x. Everything looks good except the back seam on the seat came undone And the speedometer is not working. I have read that the speedometer not working could be a bad bearing or a bearing going bad. The guy claims that the previous owner said that all the gauge wires got to close to the exhaust and melted together And he rewired everything and everything worked but the speedo. He said it must have not got a good connection. Says it just needs rewired. He said he rode it all last year with no bearing issues or any issues at all. I can pick it up for $700 bucks. I don't know much about snowmobiles so I was wondering if any of you had any advice should I keep looking?
