Possible overheat with 4 stroke

mercredi 28 septembre 2016

So I just picked up an Arctic Cat 2002 4 stroke Touring. It started up great when I was looking at it, but we couldn't find the spark plugs to save my life (was beginning to wonder if it was a 4 stroke diesel). The oil & the crankcase oil both were clear and new looking. The owner said he had it professionally summerized 2 years ago. Beyond the missing spark plugs, the only thing wrong with the engine I could see was that the plastic belt guard had melted off its mounting bolts.

Once I got it home, I discovered the integrated coil - spark plug business and the plugs were quite oily and blackened. The compression was great - about double or more what I was seeing on my two strokes & consistent between all three cylinders. Then I noticed there was no antifreeze in the overflow tank, or any visible when I opened the coolant cap. It was wet though, so there had to be some AF in there.

So my theory is that either there is an AF leak, or when it was Summer-ized, they drained the coolant and forgot to refill it. Then in the intervening years the owner or his kids ran it for awhile where it got hot enough to melt the belt guard and when it stank of burning plastic, they (hopefully) shut it down and put it back on the trailer.

Anyway, I'm not sure what to make of the fouled plugs - could be fogging oil, or some sort of oil injection business when you first turn the key and have to wait while some electrical motor or pump does something (like waiting for glow plugs. :) ). Not at all sure what that wait is about.

Most importantly, I'm wondering what else I should look for? For sure I'm going to make sure there isn't a coolant leak. The oily plugs will take care of themselves perhaps once it runs for awhile. Is this something I really need to bring to a dealer/mechanic to verify it's all ok?

I appreciate any/all advice you can send my way. I'm reasonably mechanical - more so with 4 strokes than 2 strokes - but there is a limit what I can do without a decent shop/tools/patience. :dunno:
