Hello,
My family is looking to get into snowmobiling, but we're all completely new to the sport.
I've been researching all makes and models, but have found it confusing to say the least. I'm hoping to get some opinions from long time riders about what sleds might make the most sense.
I'm looking for at least two sleds and a trailer with a budget of $20k. I do not have a make/model preference as long as it meets a few basic needs. They can be new or used. I want something that will mainly be ridden on groomed trails throughout NYS, but I also want at least some capability for off-trail riding as my family has a small amount of land that we'll likely ride on a little bit. They need to have 2-up seat options, but do not need to be 2-up from the factory. They will primarily be solo riding sleds, but we will need the capability to take a passenger comfortably on occasion. Those are pretty much my only hard requirements.
Initially, I was eyeing Polaris Indy's as it seems like a popular beginner sled that I could get a couple new within my budget, but now I'm not really sure if they'd be good for 2-up riding or if we'd get bored with them too quickly. I've since been looking at the Polaris Switchback, Ski-Doo Renegade, or possibly MXZ's. I like that Ski-Doo offers a 2-up seat for all of their sleds.
It seems like the crossovers would fit the bill the best as they offer 2-up options, longer tracks, powerful engines, and the ability to go on and off trail, but they're also the most expensive of the options I've been looking at. I'm wondering if the Indy's or MXZ's would be sufficient.
Again, we're all new riders and none of us are fast or aggressive riders or ever really will be most likely. Don't get me wrong, I will probably ride semi aggressively and like to hit some small jumps, but I'm still a pretty reserved type rider.
So, am I considering the right sleds? Is there one in this list that I should be focusing on more than the others? Are there other makes/models that I should consider?
